heres a question for you. just been sat watching open processes in Task Manager, had nothing open except Firefox but just on a blank page with it minimized and the memory usage started to climb up and up got to 45 000 then I closed it and opened it again and tried it again and the same happened.
whats that all about

What version of Firefox, and do you have an add-ons with it, Baz?

I would think this is probably one of those things that's nothing to worry about, until you notice it.  It could be Talkback, er, talking back.  Do you have that installed, or rather, did you remove it after Firefox installed it by default?

Firefox uses a huge amount of RAM. Right now, mine is using 53Mb.

v2.0.0.16  Simon with Adblock Plus, British English Dictionary, Mouse Gestures Redox and  Tab Mix Plus add ons. others installed but not enabled. Dont know what the Talkback is you mentioned.

v 3.x helps fix some of the memory leak issues that your are having  As simon has said, the more extentions you have, the more ram you will use.

I currently have a lot of extentions installed, my ram usage is currently 156Mb and thats about average for me on firefox 3.

Yep, as said, updating is a good plan. Just be aware, if ye use addons, some may not work with the new version yet. Still worth doing though, i always update asap. FYI mine uses about 100MB of RAM with 4 tabs open and quite a few addons.

As an aside, the nice thing about Vista is how it "pre-caches" yer most used apps.. so opening FF, fer example, is almost instant fer me now

(this is why people often say Vista uses up a lot of RAM.. but it is because it caches apps in it fer yer benefit. It drops them instantly if ye need the Ram for something else though, so it is actually very good impo)

By the way, my memory usage was quoted using Firefox 3. I do have a fair few extensions.

It blimmin' well isn't for me.  FF takes about 40 seconds to open on my Vista laptop for the first time, thereafter, admittedly, it's a bit quicker, but I was wondering if there's any way to speed it up.  What seems to take the longest is opening a link from an email.  That can take up to a minute.
