Well! I had interleaving turned off yesterday and it is now active (or not active heh) and interestingly here are my stats..

ps is thinkbroadband test working for anyone? When i load it, the java box wont clear..and i have the latest java..it was working ok yesterday for me.

My stats last night with interleaving ON... had a dangerously low SN rating of 5.6 at the lowest and i was getting 140 correctable errors per MINUTE and some uncorrectable ones... with a synch of only 7000.

Now i have zero errors, a higher SN ratio and synch! So for me..it looks like interleaving off is actually more stable and a high synch rate..?! I wont complain since it has also lowered my ping by between 20-30 :) Out of interest though, anyone know why this might be the case? I thought interleaving was there to make things more stable.

To be fair though, even with the higher synch, my actual throughput is about 1000 lower this morning. I have yet to do a bt speedtest, so perhaps my profile has lowered in the mean time. But overall, tis great

Happy days cheers

TBH, it doesn't make sense, Pistol. We are always told that it's used to stabilise the line, but yours doesn't look in need of stabilisation, and there was quite a deep level of EC being applied, given the ping time difference. Maybe the BT management software just screwed up royally?

I've got no problems with the TB tester, btw.

Yep, just a quick update, my profile has lowered. As ye can see im down nearly 2000 from my signature best result and 1000 from yesterday.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
   Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  832 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5528 kbps

Perhaps it will go up again if things remain stable. Tis interesting to me though, perhaps i was wrong.. i thought it was the high synch i was getting, together with the poor noise ratio that gave me the problems. Is it instead the actual throughput that does it? So now its lower, my noise ratio improves? I guess i thought the noise ratio was only dependent upon the line and physical conditions, not the actual speed.

ah cheers Rik, maybe just something funky with my java.
Yeah, if i didnt know better i would say that i DIDNT have interleaving on before because i had such an unstable line... and now it IS on... heh. But both IDnet and my router software said it was on and is now off. Strange and Beautiful as the song title goes :)

It should go to 7150 as long as the line is stable. Allow five days though.

It's the sync/noise margin that causes problems, the throughput is limited by these, it does not in itself add to the problem, so you were right in your belief. Perhaps BT did something else when they turned off the interleaving?

Good perhaps I should try mine with interleave off ,however without being the "harbinger of doom" if you resync in the morning there is less noise around and sync rates will be high. However as the day wears on and noise increases towards evening and night time your SNR margin will fall and obviously if it falls too far for your router to cope with you will loose sync.

Your profile is out for your sync. you must have resynced at a lower rate. It will only increase if you can maintain your sync at a high level. As your profile gets nearer to the sync rate any changes in profile no longer occur over a few hours but can take up to five days.

Cheers Steve, and yep..i reckon ye should wait at least a day and ill let ye know how i go first.. Ill monitor the noise and synch every few hours. ye are wise to mention the progress during the day.. now ye mention it i have noticed my line noise get worse later in the day..  yesterday my noise ratio dropped from 9 down to 6, then up to 13...then down to 9....

hmmm. And just there now i lost connection to the router again :(   But i think there must still be a problem with my lan connection as i wasnt dropped by idnet and i couldnt connect to my router at all even though all lights were on. I had to power cycle it.

I think my profile dropped because i have been losing connection so many times the last couple of days. Fingers crossed it will stay stable, but.. i have a feelin the doom ye mention will pop its head about a bit fer me heh.

I read you had trouble with routerstats and snr monitoring. The other tool which will do it is DMT but whether it will work with your router or OS I have no idea.I dont use it to alter my connection (you can with some routers set your own margin using this software) but it will monitor your SNR and also for some routers has a simple working CLI command interface which I find useful for getting stats

I take it you've done all the usual stuff of removing the ring wire etc?

Cheers again gents. Ill take a look at that app now ta Steve. Yep, i have stopped running routerstats because a) when i loose connection to router, it freaks out, and b) im being paranoid that it might cause the lose of connection heh.

Rik, ta, i have one of the newer sockets so no ring wire. I have removed the phone and plug directly into master socket.

I have a bad feeling that whatever it is causing me to loose conection to router from my side, will always result in me having to power cycle router to get it back and thus my profile will not go up but possible further down :s
B

Rik

Even if you have an NTE5, Pistol, the ring wire can still be connected, so if you have any hard-wired extension,s it's worth checking. OTOH, if it's a filtered faceplate, separate phone and ADSL sockets, you should be OK.

Hi Pistoleer ,

Just to let you know, it's impossible on your BT line to get the speed that you display in your signiture - the maximum profile for a start is only 7150!!!

cheers guys. I took a couple of pics of my faceplate etc, once i can upload them ill show ye. I cant see ANY wires attached... :o

Lance.. lol! That is bizarre then heh. Perhaps the speedtest was being funny then because that is what it reported, i didnt fake it ;)  Mind ye, ive never had that high before or since heh.

Steve

Its the antivirals or software firewall that gives you funny results, I have had 16Mbs before now, best to disable protection temporarily prior to testing.

Sorry, i should have mentioned the antivirus problem! It does, though, highlight the problems of speedtesters.
