UPnP on 2700 ?

I have been occasionally looking at this forum for a while and there seems to be some good knowledge around here on 2700's so I thought it was about time I registered and participated.

I've had a 2700HGV  ( well 2 actually , one spare ) for about a year now and swear by it. Great piece of kit.

I always believed the 2700 didn't support UPnP. However I recently started running a Ubuntu box and was very surprised to notice that when I ran Skype it opened some ports on the firewall. At first I didn't believe it so I put the firewall back to default for the Ubuntu box and tried again.
Sure enough every time I run Skype it manages somehow to open ports on the 2700 , anyone and ideas how its managing to do it?

BTW it leaves the ports open when Skype exits so what ever is doing it aint that clever.

Never noticed it with the Windows version of Skype though...

Hi and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

Like you, I've always understood the 2700 does not support UPnP, so I have no idea how it's happening, unless of course, MS have a non-standard way of implementing UPnP?

Hi MisterW, and  :welc:

I also use a 2700, but I'm not very technical on it, so I expect someone else will comment on your findings, which do seem quite interesting.  :)

Bizarre. looking at portforward.com you have to set up a hosted application containing the relevant Skype ports and assign it to the relevant PC.

Thanks for the interest, my you get some quick replies round here!!

Yes it is bizarre, it somehow manges to add the following Application(s) to the User defined list
and associate them with the correct PC each time you run Skype.

Skype TCP at 192.168.5.73:10207
Skype UDP at 192.168.5.73:10207

As I say it only seems to be the Linux version of Skype that manages to do it, running Skype on a Windows
system doesn't affect the firewall.

I dont know why Skype wants port 10207 open cos it seems to still work fine even when I've manually set
the firewall back to maximum protection.

Hi, not sure but there may be a possible clue here - see in particular the penultimate paragraph.

PeteTheGeek,

Interesting...
That probably explains why the Linux box does it and the Windows one doesnt, as the Windows one hasnt been upgraded to Skype V3 yet.
However, how is Skype managing to change the 2700 firewall settings  ( especially without the router password ) ?

I'll try and dig a bit deeper into the Skype UPnP implementation...

MisterW

Here's an interesting article on UPnp http://osdir.com/ml/gnome.gaim.devel/2004-11/msg00208.html

Maybe I'll try and have a go with my 2700 and see if it responds.
Since I'm in the office 'fraid I've got to go and do some proper work now!

MisterW

Found this http://www.upnpworks.alcidelic.com/

A UPnP tool. Will try it when I get home but if anyone else wants to try it with a 2700 in the meantime feel free...

Well I tried UpNpPw with a 2700 and this is the result:-

======================================================================
| Status: [055] - (UPnP Router Error)                                |
======================================================================
| Internal IP Address Failure -> Invalid Response From UPnP Router.  |
======================================================================

So that sort of agrees with what we all believed, the 2700 isnt UpNP compliant.

Will continue to investigate

Curious stuff. Thanks, MW.  :thumb:

Well the 2700 certainly responds to UPnP requests!!.
Try the UPnP tester utility from here http://noeld.com/programs.asp?cat=dstools#UPnPTest

It definitely sees the 2700 and there appears to be quite a lot of info available.
