Sounds good to me also but I have an existing 12 month contract with Bt at the moment which doesn't run out until February 2009 so I will have to wait and see.

I don't wanna shove a spanner in the works here, or be a doom merchant, but this development kind of worries me tbh. I'd rather deal with a specialist in one thing that knows what they are doing, which is what I thought IDNet were.

You've obviously not seen the other, albeit internet related, activities that IDNet are involved in! I would say they are more a specialist in lots of things!

So Simon, the company Im with ATM (not BT) gives me cheaper line rental, monthly contract and no " **excluding Channel Islands " get out, for my free calls. Most other firms also exclude the Channel Islands, where I have family and call regularly. All off peak calls there are free.  What will IDNet be offering ?

Possibly so, but are they specialists in telephony?

Not yet, but who knows in 10 years time... :)

Quite true  :)

I'd be interested in this.  I like beta testing things but like Cavillas I'm locked into BT until sometime early next year.  Maybe by then it'll all be sorted and I can consider the move but the thing that would put me off moving from BT is if it all falls apart you are faced with a huge bill to go back to BT.

"If you choose a combined broadband + phone package that costs, say, £25 per month you can split that any way you like between voice minutes and data downloaded. For example you could use:
25Gb data download or
625 Daytime minutes or
3000 Evening Minutes or
A combination of 10Gb + 300 Daytime + 200 Weekend + 100 Evening minutes."

The explanation Simon gave about this certainly piques my interest.  Given that you can split voice minutes and data downloads, does this mean that the calls will be made via VOIP?

Rik

Not afaik, Krysia, they will be carried on the Openreach network, just as they would be by BT.

I must admit I'm curious as to how it would work.  Whilst the idea sounds fine and makes a good USP, monitoring your usage could get a bit complicated.  "I've downloaded 4 films this month so I can only talk to the kids for 20 minutes.  Or is it 15?  Or maybe 30?  Hmm not sure....."   :)

No doubt Simon and co have thought this through and it will be interesting to see how it works out.

Lance

I'm sure the new customer portal will make it very clear what you have left of your allowence :)
