system restore

Ive asked before I think about if you can set the amount of points that system restore does (cant remember the answer so a reminder will be good  ) BUT what would be the reason of no points to chose from in the last week and a half. Went to do one on my sons last week and when the window was opened no points were available for 10 days.

I don't think you can set the number of points, Baz, only the amount of disk space allocated to SR. The larger the drive, the greater the number of points. Having no points at all would suggest that SR had been disabled then re-enabled, or the amount of space available had been altered. If you have points before the 10-day mark, it would suggest that nothing triggered Windows into creating a restore point.

It still should make what in XP is called system checkpoints even if nothing of note has changed.  It is said that a restore point is made after 24 hours of up time but it waits until there are a few minutes of inactivity before making a restore point.  Also if disc space is getting low it will turn off restore points.  So either one of those may be relevant or the system restore option may have been turned off.

I thought if diskspace was low, it overwrote the oldest point?

Sorry, I should have said if disc space gets *very* low it is said to turn off the restore facility altogether.  I have heard very low to mean 200mb but I don't know if that's the true figure.  It makes sense for it to do that.

Indeed it does, Ann. Fortunately, with the ever growing capacity of disks these days it seems unlikely anyone will ever get that low from normal usage!

Restore points might be getting bigger. It could be a no win situation.
