Over the past two years I would be happy saying Eset was the best AV out there - but now even Norton has improved its standards (thank god!)

Would you renew with eset again? Whats the best trustworthy AV comparisons? Any replacements? It needs to be low on resources (why i chose eset in first place tbh)

thanks

Philip

I've used Avast for 2 or 3 years now, works like a dream, updates at least once a day, and best of all.....it's free. :thumb:

Agreed

But is a free antivirus really going to live up to a paid for one?

hmm

Is it any good at antispyware or will i need another tool for that?

My objective this install is to keep as little as possible running and only necessary cr*p installed  :rant2:

Sebby

I wouldn't go with anything other than Kaspersky now. :)

Gary

Avira, Avast pro or my choice personally, Kaspersky like Sebby, I am not one for free protection you pay for what you get imho, some will say otherwise. The results in av comparatives for avast were for the pro version and were very good, you need to make sure your av is good at cleaning infections should you ever get one as well. Kaspersky is great at hunting malware hitting 94.8 % so an on demand scanner is all you would need as a stand bye and superantispyware or malwarebytes would be great for that, or course running a product such as sandboxie or returnil is the best idea.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

I have NOD32 for the past 4 years now. get it cheaper each renewal year. works for me :)

Have you seen the latest AV comparatives though Baz, Eset has sadly slipped in the last year, when Norton has better detection abilities you have to wonder and the views on Wilders support forum seem to confirm this :( it missed an 8 month old virus recently, I have removed it from Justina's laptop and am trying out Avira, I hope Eset get their act together and get back to their usual high standards

ya i saw that - thing is tho, perhaps its just 1 lapse in performance...i have till next month anyway to decide as my subscription runs out on the 28th

so would everyone recommend paying out for a superantispyware license or is the free version/a different product better to go for

Simon

Having two resident 'active' spyware components isn't always a great idea, so personally, I would stick to the free (on demand) version of SAS, if you are considering an AV with anti-spyware included.

I think the difference with the paid version is that it has an on-demand scanner. Personally, the free version is ample for me; I only want to run a manual scan every so often anyway.

So for AV -

renew as student for eset and get craploads off

kapersky (think my uncle has a copy he bought..to which i told him to switch to nod32 lol..)

avast pro

or avira (never really heard much of these guys)

a lot of people say f-secure but it hasnt really come across my mind

Sebby

I think they're all good, and you'll be pleased with whichever one you go for. :)

Simon

I've used F-Secure for years, Sam, and have no complaints about it.

No I havent seen that Gary but Ive always found it ok so will stick with it whereas I have plenty bother with Norton so wont go there for a while.

Hmm maybe it was just a blip in eset's performance?

Its had top marks/100% for x amount of years hasnt it?

Gary

Next months is not an on demand test but using heuristics and one month old signatures. Which ever you use as has been said will be a good AV ultimately you know what feels best for your system :)
