Den

I have had enough  ::) Over the last few weeks I have had computer problems, system locking up, random rebooting etc'.
So today I bid on a Hewlet Packard computer on ebay from the HP refurb shop and won.

It should arrive on Wednesday and in a few days I will start transfering things across, this will most likely take the next 6 months of my time as I have to keep the business running.

The New computer is

HP Pavillion a6220.uk
Pentium Core Duo E4400 (2.0Ghz)
2GB (2X2GB)
DVDRW DL LS
Graphics card  ATI Radeon HD2400
10/100BT network interface
360GB hard drive
including mouse and keyboard.
Microsoft VISTA Home Premium
1 year warranty
Delivery £4.99
All for £172.01 including V.A.T.

Can't wait   :smug:

I want to transfer my settings to my external hard drive before installing them on the Vista computer. Microsoft have two versions of easy transfer  tfrcable_X64  and  tfrcable_86  which is the right one to install on my old (XP) computer? Or is there another way of doing this, I dont want to run both computers at the same time as I only have one monitor.   :eek4:
Mr Music Man.

Sebby

It'll be the 86 one, Den.

Den

Thank you kind Sir, I thought it was  just checking. I dare not start until I have done my V.A.T. return and I'm starting to twitch now  ;D

Read this with interest.is Den talking about a programme when referring to X64& X86 ?as I would like to transfer some setttings over too.is Den refeerring to settings or would this include other things ?
Many hammer all over the wall and believe that with each blow they hit the nail on the head.

Sebby

They refer to the architectures, David. X86 originally referred to Intel's x86 processors, but now is used to refer to that underlying architecture (i.e. 32-bit). X64 is for 64-bit operating systems.

I believe it's just an application from MS that can move settings from computer to computer.

David

Thanks Sebby will check this out looks good and I would like to use it.... :thumb:

Vista has Windows Easy Transfer which seems to work ok but in my experience was pretty slow, it will if you wish transfer rubbish from one PC to another, so need to be selective with its use :)

Den

I needed to install windows easy transfer on my XP computer in order to move my settings to a external hard drive and for this I required WET on the XP one as well as the Vista one. When I have installed my programs on the new machine I can then move the settings across (after completing my VAT return)  :eyebrow:

Thanks Steve and Den will give it a go over the weekend

Purchased an Advent 4211 (DSG version of MSI Wind)yesterday, its a netbook with an intel atom processor,1Gb ram,80Gb drive, webcam, mic and XP as the OS, Internet connection is via wireless or bluetooth to mobile phone. It has a larger 10in screen than Eee pc and runs all the usual software and initial impressions are very good. Having spent a few hours yesterday installing software and doing a WHS backup I had a further look in daylight today and found the casing didn't fit properly around the screen  :bawl: so back to the shop and more hours today spent getting back to square one.

So now it works. :fingers:
I was impressed with the difference in D/L speeds that TCPoptisimer gave me it almost doubled.Next week planning to double the memory to 2GB and maybe use  Vista in the future as I've seen reports of them running smoother.

Tonights the night, I am going to plug the new machine in and start the long process of installing software. One question (what only one) I use a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, can I plug this in from the start or will I have to use the one supplied at first?
Mr Music Man.

Glenn

Plug it in and use it straight away, there maybe a couple of minutes that you may have to wait for the drivers to install

Rik

It might work as a basic mouse without drivers, Den, but for full functionality you'll need to install the drivers.

Sebby

It's such a shame that Logitech's software is so bloated. Are the drivers available on their own? I've never seen them before. :(

Ann

I have a logitech keyboard and mouse.  The mouse works fine without installing anything extra.  The keyboard works well except for the function keys but they don't work even when I've installed the logitech stuff so I haven't bothered.  I just use it as is.

Den

Well it's up and running, 46 updates for vista, 1hr of updates for Kaspersky, took an hour to sort my printer (then used disk and it worked fine) Very fast, very pleased so far. Lots of software on already and the first thing I did was uninstall Norton. Saturday will be for loading programs but going out first  ;D
Mr Music Man.

Lance

Sounds like a good start! Lets hope progress tomorrow is nice and smooth! Good luck!

Great stuff, Den. Now the initial work is over, you can enjoy it. :)

I think this is the best bit with pcs  loading everything on it  ;D

Cant think why you took Norton off Den  ;D

I don't know about being the best bit, David. For me, it's usually two or three days work, backups at every stage, and nothing productive gets done. I like the bit just after I finish best. :)

David

Sorry Den not me can you download them ?

Still have not got the scanner working but the media pocket drive arrived today. Plugged it in followed the instructions and set up was so easy. Can not believe that I now have a 350gb hard drive with a 160gb back up hard drive all in one unit. Will use my old external drive for my laptop and have saved yet more space on my desk.  ;D
