Well it installs in about 1 minute leaves behind only licensing information, not the usual mess, and has updates that are not less than 4 minutes old when running in this test, has the beast turned? The reviews coming in look very good indeed I'm scared to say..... this is a basic insight into it.

Symantec has launched Norton Internet Security 2009 and Norton AntiVirus 2009. The Norton 2009 products claim to have more than 300 improvements from the scanning engines to the user interface.

Said to be re-engineered for speed, the software offers low working memory usage of less than 7MB while Norton Internet Security 2009 scans in 33 seconds.

The Norton "Protection System" includes browser protection for Firefox and IE that safeguards you from web-based attacks, Enhanced Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) engine for multimedia attacks, SONAR advanced protection for real-time protection from unknown threats, Antibot protection and system recovery tool for deep infections.

On the user-friendly front, Norton 2009 also has a silent mode that suspends alerts and updates for movies watching and gaming and a smart scheduler to do scans and updates when the PC is idle.

Review below and from a non Norton loving site!

I agree Simon, but the reviews around the net are good, its scary to think it uninstalls cleanly :eek4: and it uses 150mb of hd space which is much better, 2008 used 408mb lol I'm tempted to try it but as you say scared, what if it is actually as good as the reviews say?

I'm actually quite happy with F-Secure, which is licensed for nearly another year, so apart from the curiosity factor, it wouldn't really be sensible for me to change.

Being fair I never had a problem with them but so far the security is fine at present  :fingers:

My Kaspersky one runs out in December and i could always give the norton licence to my mother who uses Norton......but......

I still have the Kaspersky licence but removed them from my machines as they did cause me problems so wont renew these.

You need to clean out remnants of old AV's  David with kaspersky and if you had old norton products you needed the uninstaller off the symantec site, you should have gone to the support forum they are really helpful, I have had zero issues with Kaspersky 2009 internet security, like Simon i like my AV but to look at Norton 2009 out of interest could be tempting

I am tempted, the reviews look very good Rik and less of the dummy, if it uninstalls cleanly and only uses 7mb in use thats damn good but i'll do it nearer the time i send this one back >:D

Keep us posted. Norton was good once, maybe they've gone back to basics and lost the bloat.

It runs well now, the 2009 product is now updated again, and the Kaspersky forum is really the place as its the official support forum but once we settle with a product its hard to move on to unfamiliar ground again :)

no bloat apparent in the 2009 product from what I have read Rik, have a read of the net reviews in your spare time, be nice if they have got it right after all these years  :fingers:  and if I load it I'll let you know :)

Thanks. Way back in the days of Compuserve, sysops (mods) were given free copies of Norton, McAfee and Solomons. At that time, they were all about as good as each other, but it was on demand scanning only, and very few viruses.

only downside i can see is a toolbar it puts on firefox and IE by the screen shots  that alone could put me off but i see the point its like McAfee site advisor, but in your face more ::)

I suspect that could be disabled, though. :)

Simon

Yes, one of the things I didn't like with previous versions was the about of icons it put in the system tray, but I found that most of them could be removed.  I certainly wouldn't want any clutter in my browser window.

I did say I simmed it

Sebby

What's simming? Is it where you get angry and throw sim cards at the screen? :P :out:

Rik

I have an answer but I'd have to ban myself.  >:D
