Hi All,

I'm with Pipex at the moment (for around the last 4 years) and I am considering switching to Idnet.

The main reason for switching is the problem i've been having with uploading to my Pipex webspace.
I have a complete website sitting on my PC and for the last 6 months have been trying to upload it using CuteFTP without success. I have got nowhere with Pipex support - waste of time i'm afraid.

Anyway, the last thing I want to do is go from Pipex to Idnet and suffer the same kind of problems.

So the question is - has anyone had any major unresolvable problems uploading to Idnet's webspace? What's the general view on the quality of the webspace service provided by Idnet?

Thanks in advance.
Ian

Welcome to the forum, Ian! :welc: Have a karma to get you started!

I've had no problems at all with it, and haven't seen any recent reports of anybody who has. When the service was migrated to a new server recently, there were one or two but some server configrations were changed and everything sorted.

As for the actual webspace, it's worth noting it is only 'basic' webspace, in that there is no php/sql support. Not a problem if your website is only basic webpages!

:welc: :karma:

As Lance says, webspace is really trouble-free, and the big plus is that IDNet are a small company that know what they're doing, so any problems will get sorted. :thumb:

Have you tried using a different FTP program? I gave up on CuteFTP, whereas FireFTP (extension for Firefox) and GoFTP (freeware) work like a dream.

IIRC, Pipex moved the webspace to a different server and it never worked properly after that. That was years ago, too! ::)

i have been with Pipex, who were ****. had no problems uploading my website using FTP (filezilla)

To tell the truth I wouldn't consider moving ISPs simply for webspace.  What I did was buy my own domain and get it hosted.  I use purplecloud http://www.purplecloud.com/ .  It costs of course but not a whole lot and it gives webspace and email and it means that whenever I change ISPs my webspace and email doesn't change.  They also have a control panel which you can use instead of a third party FTP client.

That's not to say I wouldn't move from Poopex to IDNet but that would be an ISP decision and not a webspace decision.

Just out of curiosity do they use cPanel or is it a proprietary one of their own?  I'm assuming it is Linux based hosting and not MS.....

A lot of people swear by PurpleCloud, although I've always used Clook.  More expensive though not a lot, and very reliable.

Ann

Yes, they use Linux and the control panel is by Plesk.

Thanks for all your replies. Some great advice there.

Just had a look at Purplecloud's website and they definitely look like a good option, thanks Ann.

I have other reasons for moving to IDnet, not just webspace issues, so I plan to get the MAC today and hopefully join IDnet within the next week or so.

Thanks again for your help.

You might like to hop over to ThinkBroadband and look at the Pipex forums.  Leaving Pipex is not always as easy at it sounds since they, or at least Tiscali, have a habit of taking money from your account after you've left.  If you are paying via continuous CC authorisation you might think about changing to Direct Debit before you move.  That puts you in control as you can cancel the DD, whereas the Credit Card debit needs to be cancelled by Pipex.  Quite a few people have had trouble with this as Tiscali (who now own Pipex) seem rather loath to cancel...   :)

I think a few peeps here have come from Pipex/Tiscali, so they may be able to advise you better than me.

You could look at this, but have some coffee available first....    ;D

I escaped Pipex before the Tiscali take over, but even then they had a habit of 'forgetting' you'd left, and continuing to charge.

Surprisingly my sister who was with them after the Tiscali takeover, had no trouble escaping.  So far.....

Getting a MAC out of them was like getting blood from stone too.  Wonder if that's improved?

I managed to get my MAC from Pipex (this was back in November 2007) with fairly little trouble. The difficult part was getting through to them on the phone!

I've had no issues at all with FTP uploading to my webspace on idnet.
