Advent X19W Monitor with DVI

Last year I bought a Advent X19W monitor and today I came across the user guide. It mentions the dual version and when I checked it does have a DVI socket. What advantages are there in connecting this to my computer.

Sharper pictures, Den, assuming you're using the VGA analogue connection atm. It's a bit like the difference between a PAL and RGB TV picture.

I can not remember if it came with a DVI cable, the book says it should if it's the dual model. I assume I can buy one from PC world or somewhere. Does anyone know the spec for this monitor so I know for sure that it is the dual model.

I would have thought if the DVI socket is present on the monitor its there for a reason. On some monitors if you disconnect all inputs you will see on the screen it searching for analogue or digital inputs.Cannot find any info on Advent x19w as it presumably is a DSG branded product made by another company.

I bought it from PC World (I'm sorry) and chose it as it was one of the few I have seen with glass covering the screen and I liked the picture quality also it just fitted under a cupboard in my office. Never thought abought DVI until I looked at the user guide tonight and now I want it cause I can.

Go for it, you just need to locate the DVI out on the desktop and get a cable.I would have thought PCWorld probably not the cheapest option though

For cables, PC World is probably the most expensive shop on the planet.

My Dell Monitor came with VGA and DVI Cables, I assumed that all dual input monitors came with both.

DVI is far superior to VGA, but whatever you do, don't buy the cable in PC World; they'll probably charge a fortune for it! I'd order one from eBuyer or somewhere like that.

OK so now I am stumped  Bought a DVI lead from a local supplier for £5.00 took it home plugged in at the computer and monitor and nothing happened. They would not go to the expense on the monitor of putting a DVI socket if it was not to be used would they? If they have I'm glad I only paid a fiver for the lead but it does not make sense.
Graphics card is a ADI Radeon HD2400 do I have to activate any thing on there or should it be set up by default?

It might be that you have to change the input manually on the monitor, Den. Or, if you haven't already, you probably need to restart the computer.

OK, next stage. Turned computer off and on (had done this before) and it worked this time. Pressed the two buttons together and up came the DVI screen but shows the wall paper with a great picture bu nothing else, no icons or menus. If I press to change over while watching this screen it just shows the wall paper and nothing else.

Are there any graphics card settings in the Control Panel that might need adjusting, Den?

Tweeked the settings (I think) set up should be right. Still just have a wallpaper screen and no icons so can not use it for anything.

Is your desktop size greater than the resolution of the monitor? ie a 1600 x 1200 desktop, but only a 1200 x 800 display set on the screen?

Sorted (I think) settings had to be changed over in the Catalyst Control Centre. Seems to be working now so I will play while I work and see if I prefer it    So I had a dual monitor all this time and did not know

Great, clear viewing, picture quality much better but I could not see anything wrong with it before but definitely better.
Went out shopping came back and the screen was back on d-sub with no icons, pressed buttons and the DVI screen came back on so I'm assuming that the computer turned it self off and back on therefore reverting to d-sub as default.

Check the manual for the monitor, Den. Usually it will auto-detect which input is in use, but otherwise there should be a selection possible via the OSD.

Next question  Is it better to unplug the vga cable on a dual monitor as when the monitor goes to power save mode it sometimes reverts to D-sub and I have to reset it to DVI.
