Help-signed up but still not connected!

This is my first post-I haven't been able to get through as IDNET are still on their hols it seems!

I  was/am with what I still call Wanadoo but is now Orange and after a succession of bad problems and extensive research into the best I.S.P's, signed up with IDNET earlier this month.

I have had a few hiccups for example they didn't accept my MAC code but then a different person did make it work. They gave me a connection date but on the day they sent me an email to say there had been a problem with the LLU connection by BT and there was a backlog-new date given as 27th. Curses!

I phoned idnet to check this out and they told me I shouldn't have been given a date at all as it was uncertain. I am hoping these are just teething problems but it doesn't look that promising at the mo! I am still officially with Orange even though I lost connection coincidentally a few days after signing up with idnet. To my knowledge this still hasn't been fixed but I haven't checked again as the stress of dealing with it/Orange makes me nearly have a breakdown!!

If it hasn't been fixed, will it affect my new connection? Sorry, I'm not much of a boffin!

I feel really disappointed at the mo as I am "signed up" with two providers but have no broadband and no light at the end of the tunnel.

I had to get a dial up connection in the interim which must be costing me a small fortune and I don't suppose I will get a refund!

Any ideas gratefully received.......pleeeeeeease!

Hi Kitty,
Welcome to the forum and hopefully to IDnet. Sorry to hear this is not going as planned, I am no boffin either, but other threads I have read seem to suggest that LLU transfers can be a pain. From my experiences with IDnet all I can say is Customer Support is a revelation compared with my prevoius ISP's of AOL and Plusnet and IDnet will sort this out, although this is not the best time of year, hang in there. Perhaps if you give the group some details of the router you are using (if you are using one) this will give somebody with idential equipment the chance to guide you through the set up just to check all is OK at your end.

Thanks for your reply at this silly hour!

The people I have spoken to at idnet have already made me feel infinitely more confident  and at ease than when I have to phone Orange-they haven't made me have palpitations or want to throw things or anything!!I am sure I will be very pleased when it is all ironed out but I feel helpless at the mo! I know the LLU connection thing is a pain and I don't suppose there is much I can do. You are right of course-it is the wrong time of year too.

I haven't tried to connect because idnet said it wouldn't so I didn't want to stress myself out by trying but maybe I should take a deep breath tomorrow and try anyway.
I suppose the idnet office will be closed until well into next week anyway so perhaps I will have a go just in case!

I feel i will be back on here tomorrow!

After an ongoing problem with BT not connecting me, i have finally been connected this evening, allegedly!

Now I am staring at my Speedtouch 585 and the set-up guide and  trying to work out how it is wireless!!

My phone sockets are in different rooms to my P.C and I previously used a wireless livebox.

If you have to connect the Ethernet cable to the P.C and the router then the RJ11 ribbon cable between the router and the phone socket, it is not wireless is it? And it won't stretch that far11

Please help!! What am I doing/reading wrong?

Simple language please-I am still not a boffin!

Hi Kitty,

I'm not familiar with the speedtouch device, however generally you need to make the initial setup with a wired connection to your pc. You can then configure the adsl bit, your user name and password and hopefully you'll then have a wired connection to the internet. You can then configure the wireless side of the router. You should then be able to disconnect the wire between your pc and speedtouch and use your pc to detect the wireless signal.

Hope this helps, I dare say someone with that particular speedtouch device will come along soon and give you a bit more detail.

I don't have the Speedtech, but the advice given by Rob sounds good for most, if not all wireless modem/routers.

Thanks, it sure does help! It seems completely logical and obvious now!

There are very few instructions and THAT is NOT one of them! I like to follow instructions to the word but they are seldom like that.

Hi Kitty, you don't mention what you are using as a wifi client adapter (dongle, card etc.) maybe once you bring it into the equation it'll all fall into place.

What is a wifi client adaptor and a dongle?! I think I might have an integreted card.

Doesn't anybody else find it really annoying not to be able to access support? I am pulling my hair out big time!

I bought the pre-configured hardware from idnet to avoid setting up problems! I am still trying to get the wired connection and running through the set up disc. when it asked me for my user name and password as provided by idnet, it came up as wrong so I cannot proceed. 

Sorry I am in a stinking mood but I have been with awful wanadoo/ orange and their terrible service for a few years. I did a lot of research to come up with Idnet and I signed up at the beginning of Dec. I am only just connected and there is no support....not feeling that thrilled at the moment to waste the whole weekend trying to guess things in an effort to connect!!

Any ideas for help? What do idnetters do?

If its any consolation i also migrated in from the farce that is Freeserve/Wanapoo/The futures not bright with Orange last august and had the same problem my migration was a week later than expected down to them monkees at Orange lol thankfully Miriam at IDNet sorted it out promptly.
If you need any help sorting your SpeedTouch up let me know i use the same router as do a few  others here here you will get plenty of help.

Hi Steve,

When I say connected, i mean in theory of course-every time I connect to see if there are any answers on here for example, I am having to dial-up, disconnect, dial-up blah blah blah!

Thanks for your offer of help-I have already mentioned my immediate problem (previous post)  and cannot move on from there-my password etc is not being accepted so I am stuck.

I haven't managed to speak to Miriam since I first signed up although she was very nice when I did!

So, I do need help please!!!!!! What shall I do?

I feel for you Kitty, sounds like you've hit a brick wall there.

As far as the wifi bit goes you really should find out how your pc is going to communicate with your router. What exactly did you get in the form of "pre-configured hardware" from IDNet? I'm using existing gear so I don't know what it is that IDNet send you.

Unless IDNET do things very differently from other ISP's I think you may have been a bit hastie with the set up disc.

If your rouer was preconfigured you should have been able to just plug in and go online.

" Setting up" would mean altering the preconfigured settings that IDNET used.

In set up you should see.......DEFAULT/Factory settings and CUSTOM settings,the custom profile should be the one want.

I put in the disc, went through set-up and it asked me for user name and password and then said they were invalid even though I had been sent them via email.

Kitty as far as i see you have your router connected ny ethernet cable plugged in and switched on what i cant understand is why u have to put in your username and password in if its already configured? can you explain a bit more

Kitty u shud be able to just plug the router in and and it shud just connect when it powers up if idnet have pr-configured it you wont need ur set up disc you might have to access the router settings to click connect if idnet didnt tick the always on section type 192.168.1.254 in your IE browser and then when a widow prompts u type in Admistrator with a capital A no password needed and under the broadband section click on connect

I will cut off my dial up and try again in a minute but  even if I succeed I am still left with the problem that I don't know how to make a wireless connection after doing an initial wired connection!

Thanks for asking-I haven't had the energy to deal with it. Car broke down this morning so too stressed out for more stress if you see what I mean!

I will probably wait to call idnet tomorrow unless I get a burst of enthusiasm.

Just one thing though, I can't get into my hotmail account-I click on it in my favourites as usual but it "times out".........any ideas?

I have recommended two people to IdNET who have bought the speedtouch routers from them (not sure off-hand if they were wireless ones or not now) but in both cases although some months apart there was rather a crucial mistake (and for all I know may still  be in that bit of paper that comes with it). does it  say 'admin' as the username if it does it could well be 'Administrator' (as stevelondon has stated) I phoned about this as I had entered 'admin' as requested and was getting a username /password invalid. Apparantly it was well known, but nobody thought it worth correcting on the paper it seems, without it, it will be impossible to talk to the router through the web interface. They may have fixed this now and it may not be applicable to your speedtouch, but just in case I would check with CS in the morning.

yes its Administrator with a capital A and without a password unless idnet change the login to admin in the configuration if so the username will be admin and the password will also be admin as once you change the login username the password is the same.

Thanks so much everybody for your kindness-I only just noticed that I had messages in my inbox too!

The problem is not solved as
A; the instructions were not quite right but
B, in any case I couldn't connect as BT have messed up the connection!

Miriam is doing her best to chase them up and sort it out.

I can't wait to be reconnected-it has been like living in the dark ages for over a month!

I run a small animal charity and haven't been able to do what I need to do.

I am still wondering why I cannot access my hotmail account-probably a coincidence but grateful for any ideas. There might be some important emais that I am missing-makes me worry!

There is no logical reason why you shouldn't be able to access Hotmail via your Dial-Up Connection.

In all the messing about, perhaps I have changed something although I can't imagine what.

I have never had a problem before and have had an account for a few years. I  have been on dial -up for the last month while waiting for my broadband and it has been fine. It is just the last few days, coinciding with my trying to connect to my new broadband.

I cannot get in via google or any way-it just times out. Nothing else is timing out.

Just a thought Kitty what browser are you using, if you have IE7 there is a bug that causes problems signing in to M$ sites.

Hurrah-almost 5 weeks after signing up to idnet, I am connected!

It is not idnet's fault as they have to rely on BT who kept pretending to fix the fault! After many failed attempts at the exchange a BT engineer failed to turn up at my house yesterday morning. Idnet contacted one of the big fellas there and by last night, it was at long last fixed at the exchange. It seems to be fluctuating a bit but hey, I'm back to broadband. Perhaps it's just settling in!

Idnet have been really helpful as have some of you out there. Thank you for the moral support even though it seems all the advice in the world wouldn't have helped in the end unless you were a BT engineer!!
