Can anybody help please... The old boy accross the road just got new PC with Vista and trying to get connected to Idnet.
He's just purchased a new router because his Speedtouch 330 was a bit dated and still he cannot connect.
The router is an Hitachi and all the green lights appear to be on.
Using the ethernet connection everything is installed but when he put his ID net details in *****@idnet.gw5
with his p/w all he gets is trying to connect using wan miniport pppoe then its says failing to connect.
Any ideas please where we are going wrong?
.
Thanks
Alan

I wonder if the drivers for the ethernet connector are properly installed, Alan? Open device manager > hardware and check whether there's a yellow exclamation mark against the device.

Thanks for quick reply Rik.. He's just nipped out so will check later..
Another question please.. Trying to get into the router stats etc using the digits 198.192.2.1 or whatever
when he enters his password which was altered from the default
it says does not reconise.. so cannot get into the properties
of the router.. Even tried the default settings again and still cannot access them..
Is there away to reset router to factory settings.. I cannot remember seeing
a reset button any were.

What Hitachi router is it? never really used or seen one tbh
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

I cannot telll you at the mo Gary as he's out.. He bought it this morning at a local shop at £45 because he wanted a internet connection, but not having much luck..

I don't know that router, Alan, so if there's no reset button, I suspect that it's a case of holding down one or more other buttons while applying power, or it's a paper clip job. A quick Google returned more information on woodworking routers than ADSL routers but no manuals, unfortunately. :(

It would be worth trying it on your machine, Alan, as you know your ethernet connection is OK. How did he manage to change the password and then forget it so quickly, btw? ;)

Only one I found apart from said wood working routers was this http://www.oyyy.co.uk/product.php/70204/hitachi--wireless-adsl2+-voip-router?CAWELAID=243007962 and it was £23 ??? so no idea must say in the manual :dunno:

He didn't forget Rik.. I was there when he entered it and entered it again.. Will have to look deeper for a reset..

The Hitachi UK site doesn't list routers at all. :(

Hitachi usually just re-brand most stuff these days, they no longer seem to make anything themselves. :(

Another one bites the dust, eh. :(

Certainly seems that way Rik, shame they used to make good TV's.

Lasted forever. :thumb:

Not to mention routers, of the woodworking kind at least. :)

He shouldn't be trying to connect in the old "dial-up" way like he used with his SpeedTouch. The internet should just be on if the router is connected properly. What lights are on on the router?

Shouldn't that be PPPoA?
Ted
There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Sebby

It should, but the router should be taking care of that anyway - it sounds like he's still trying to manually initiate a connection through Windows.

alan

Thanks for all replies.. Will go to his house later today and get more info.. Could it be something to do with his machine trying to connect with a wan miniport? have never heard of it myself.
It was showing through PPPoe.. How do I change it to PPPoa.. Even created a new connection and still it would not connect to the internet.
I remember 3 steady green lights on the front of the router so I think the installation went OK with the router itself.

You don't need a connection with a router, Alan, it's just the network as far as Windows is concerned.

Make sure in the network connections the local area connections are enabled, also in IE make sure its not set to never dial a connection :) and remove all speedtouch software etc

Yep, good points, Gary. :thumb:

Sorry for not replying earlier... He was out all day yesterday so I could not access.. Well the good news is its now up and running... Done a total reset
and entered details as required and it connected without effort. So to be honest, I don't know what the problem was. He's one happy over 75 who's
surfing away like a good one. Many thanks again for your suggestions/ideas. At least I have learnt a few things myself. Now if I can find a way to keep them in the old brain box I'll be even happier :thumb:
