You will have noticed my absence over the last few days (no one say its been better or i will throw my toys again )

I decided to install a 7600GT Graphics Card and EBay my X700 , i read a few reviews before buying it and they all said no extra power connector is needed unless its the PCI version so no problem as i  use AGP .

In my rush to get the thing in the box i didn't look closely at it and installed drivers and away i went.

Got a lot more FPS in CoD2 running in DX7 as i used to with the X700, decided to try DX9 and a few mins in the monitor turned off as if it was in standby. (PC still running)

I tried a few times and the same would happen.

The next few hours were spent cleaning old drivers trying new ones e.t.c. and nothing worked yet i could play in DX7 with no problem  ???

Out of desperation i decided to reseat the thing and thats when i found the connector for the power lead  >:(

Its no working fine and worth every penny .as the title says "Dont always believe what you read   ::)

Just to add i got it from Overclockers who have had a bit of stick in the gaming forums over the past 18 months, i ordered it in the morning and it arrived the next day , not bad service.

Nerval

That's odd.  My 7600GT doesn't have  a power lead.
(And it works fine as well)

I wonder if it's not what it says  ???

Is it AGP or PCI ?

Mine is  made by Leadtek and is AGP ,you can see the connector on the top right.

Nerval

It's PCI-E
This is it

Yup, that is a PCI-E card and it needs the connector,in fact I am suprised you could boot at all without it.

I happen to have a spare lead/connectot for that card somewhere if you are stuck.

What mobo is it on? Do you have a PCI-E slot?

Nerval

Well Dorset, you had me rattled there!
I've taken the side off the machine and there's  nowhere to plug a power lead into the grafix card..
I'm sure it was one of the things I checked when I put it together - but that was in August and I can't remember it now.
It's an EVGA 7600GT (256P2E550AX)  which may well be obsolete now, knowing how these things change.  I can't find it on Scan's site any more under the model no.

Mobo is ASUS A8N-E and that graphics card is plugged into a PCI-E slot as far as I know.

Had a quick look on Google and the 7600GT doesn't seem to need the connector.

maxping

I know nothing about the workings of a PCI-E Mobo but a quick Google found this.

Point Of View - GeForce 7600 GT

--Installation--
The GeForce 7600 GT is a PCI-E card so you need to make sure you mother board supports it. The instillation its self is as easy as installing any other graphics card. The card isn't overly big and draws power directly from the PCI-E slot and therefore does not need an extra power connector. Case open, old card out, new card slotted in, reinstall drivers, good to go. The whole process took me about 30 minutes and was pain free.

DorsetBoy

Yes.........we are crossing posts,my comment was meant for Max,and I was wrong anyway, his picture looked like the PCI-E model.

Nerval ,your card will run off the slot.(The Geforce 6800's and 6 series I use on builds all require the extra lead)

Now.........Max and and his AGP.......take a look here.............http://www.leadtek.com/3d_graphic/winfast_a7600_gttdh_2.html

Leadtech state on this page that a minimum 300w power supply is required fot this card.

mrapoc

Hey im back  :D

Well to get things straight - an agp card will not fit in a pci-e slot and vice versa. Unless you have one of those rare asrock boards with both slots I doubt you can fit both. My 6600gt AGP required a power connection and thats like 2 years old now. The same applies for my x1900gt - Its a common fact nowadays that with more power these cards have, the more power they drain  :) The 8800gts for example needs at least a 600w psu to function (depending on power drain from rest of the system).

Those are the differences between the two types :)

Maybe you were mixed up about PCI and PCI-e as PCI is the interface used for older cards and soundcards which usually do not require extra power from the psu directly

maxping

I think you have the wrong end of the stick, my AGP card needs a extra power supply (the reason i had so much trouble) the PCI-E does not, Dorset told Nerval (who has the PCI-E card) it did need the extra power supply.
This is where the confusion crept in.

mrapoc

aha - thats weird!! If anything the pci-e would need power i would have said. Maybe you got a slightly different revision of the card?

Nerval

No Mrapoc, my PCI-E card definitely doesn't need a separate power supply. And as Max points out that's normal of 7600GT cards.
The confusion's my fault really for doubting myself when I read Dorset's comment which wasn't aimed at me anyway.

So Max's AGP card needs a power supply, my PCI-E one doesn't.
But I'd guess you can't generalise.
