Hi guys!

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to routers, this being my first one... not that I'm much more experienced with computers in general.

So I got this router working and can access Internet with my laptop, great. But the wireless connection is totally unprotected which is not so great.  :eek4: The set-up does not offer automatically for configuration of security, I think it may be under "Advanced Settings" and I haven't a foggiest how to go on about it.

Also, I seem to be able to only use the wireless connection, not cables which I have always used before (at my friend's house), even with the wireless card switched on. (There's a little on & off switch on my laptop.) As much as I love the idea of being able to move around the house, I would still prefer to use cables in some occasions e.g. gaming & file transfer in home network, where walls are too thick (they are pretty thick in an old house).

Anybody here willing to hold my hand and write up a tutorial setting up security for this router? I don't know what version it is, but it does support 802.11g and wpa2/psk

Hi Claptrap, and  :welc:

I think we first need to ascertain which router you have, then I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Basically, you need to enable WPA (the highest security) in both your router and laptop, with a 63 random character key, with which the router and laptop will "handshake" to enable network access.

You could use GRC.com for easy generation of keys.

Hi Claptrap and welcome to the forum.    :)

I don't use a Netgear but you could try here as a first shot.  The wireless section is towards the bottom of the page.

Any more questions and someone will be along to help you out.

Oops!!  Sorry, I didn't notice the router is in the thread title!

Myst

Hi and wlcome m8.

log in to your router at 192.168.0.1

default user and pass are admin and password

click on basic settings

Encapsulation is PPPoA
fill in userneme and pass for your access from ISP
if its from here i guess you will have a static IP - select static and add that in - if from elsewhere then its get dynamic
DNS - get automatically

That should get that part going

For security go into wireless settings

Change the SSID to something other than the default
region  - Europe
mode g&b
i personally have SSID broadcasting name

Look now at security options

and see which you wish to use - i tend to use WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key

if you check that button and enter a passphrase in the box between 8-63 characters

Hit apply and that is you done.

hope that helps

Thanks, Myst. :thumb:

Oh, and welcome, claptrap. :karma:

I have a DG834PN so may be similar. I agree with all that Myst said and it is just personal but in the wireless settings I DONT have SSID broadcasting but in the section 'Wireless Station Access List' I have all the systems I want to be able to use the router named in that list. At the moment its just one laptop but did have my sons system upstairs on the list when it was wireless. Have changed it to cable now and it still works ok with the wireless turned on, there is a tick box for 'Enable Wireless Access Point' you could try unticking that then try cables but I would have thought it should work any way as mine does.

When you get it set up I would also change the default login username and password to make it safer. I only changed the password but made it a good one  ;)

Perhaps these excellent FAQ's are becoming "lost" in the help section.

Where else do we put them though, Steve? :(

Perhaps as the first heading as the others are either dated or perhaps of lesser importance. In computer discussion a sticky directing to the FAQ's?? :)

We can't 'order' the stickies, unfortunately, they go purely on date - I'll look at whether I can see a way to combine more into the main FAQ though.
