Well i decided to take the plunge and order a new phone line for my house through idnet.

now this project is to be done in 2/3 stages.

1.) install new line

2.) transfer my adsl over to new line.

Now one little question i know lines are a bit thin on the ground in my village, they have not run out (yet) but every bt eng i speak to says they are running out. whet happens if no lines are avalible? do BT install more?

Rik

I guess only BT know the answer to that, Dean. :) First thing they'll try to do, I suspect, is DACS a voice-only pair.

g7pkf

Theres already a dacs at the top of my street, they had to disconnect it as someone wanted adsl

thats why i am concerned that none may be avalible.

Lance

Well, lets hope they install a new one! Maybe you could suggest fibre to them!

Rik

They do have an obligation to provide a line in most cases, but there is a financial threshold at which they can refuse, unfortunately I'm not sure what that is.

Sebby

Watch that they don't try and use another pair in the same cable, Dean.

They did that to me when I had a second line Seb, prior to BB days tho'.

Sebby

Same here. I always wonder whether it's having an impact on my ADSL, but I guess I'll just never know. :P

g7pkf

Dont think i have a choice there is only 1 incoming cable to the whole village.

then it spilts and only one cable comes up my road. in the middle of the road it spurs off to my house with a 2 pair cable.

g7pkf

has anyone had a second line installed when adsl is on the other line?

what problems did you encounter?

Rik

No, I had my second line before ADSL came along, Dean. They wanted to DACS it but I explained it was for modem use only, so they ran a new pair in for me. Not much help I guess. :(

Do you want this second line for improved ADSL? If so, and they're going to use another pair in the existing cable, it's not going to be of any benefit.

g7pkf

No the plan is not improved adsl.

I will be moving the adsl over.

its more for modem use and so i have a seperate bill from my main home phone.

also when i dial into sites i regularly have problems as people want to phone us and me blocking the line for hours on end does not go down well.

Let me explain :- 2 years ago Both myself and my parents sold our houses and bought one bigger one and we have put a large extension on it.

They now have there own living room kitchen bedroom and bathroom all on the ground floor (they are getting older by the day). we only have 1 connecting door between us :)   ;Dso we are able to have our own spaces.

We have 1 phone number and 2 main voip numbers, now the problem is they (and the wife) keep giving out the main house number not the voip number (we have one and the parents have one).

so if i am on the phone line none of the people they have given the number out to can get through!!!!

I have been bashing my head against a brick wall for 2 years, so after idnet offered phone lines   (Rik theres no smiley for bashing head against wall so i used this one)

***and i was very impressed with the service especially the honesty-remember the central going down last night, 1 phone call and i said what you broke, they said sorry a centrals gone down we are working on it, should be back soon. If that had been my previous but 1 isp they would have had me re-configuring routers etc in the mean time they would have fixed there end***

I decided to end the head bashing and get a second line installed.  The second thing that persuaded me is my operations manager authorized the cost.

That is why even though it will cost £47 to move my adsl line at least it will give me 1 bill.

Think i confused them a little. i know im an awkward git. :rant2:

At present idnet are awaiting an installation date.

trouble is BT are involved  >:(

Rik

Trouble is, BT are always involved.  :eyebrow:

monopoly (no not the game).

TBH my NTL line when it worked worked well, trouble is support was non existant (and it went off line when it was hot-till i went to the little green box  up the road and opened the door for 10 minutes)

g7pkf

Well the new line is scheduled for 2nd December (AM)and apparently adsl on the same day.

I am having a couple of concerns but i have just emailed support to try and get them ironed out.

Minor glitches nothing even major enough to post (yet)

Rik

I know that one of the issues IDNet were hoping to resolve by offering a phone service, Dean, was the problems of sim provide, which really wasn't working through BT.

Already found a break in exactly the place i expected it,,, someones garden, someone who i don't get on with.

Told BT guy to be diplomatic and just say he was working on a fault.

Had to be the only neighbour i do not get on with   :(

Long story but we havent spoken in 8 months, last time we did i insisted they put everything in writing.

sour grapes really as they wanted to buy our house but could not afford it (then we go and put a wacking great big extension on).  its not me honest......

I have keys for the other neighbours house as we look after the cats when they go away (and the kids regularly lock themselves out)

g7pkf

Well round of applause for BT and idnet.

all done.

new line with adsl all sorted with very little hassle.

stats at present are:-

5312 kbs         832 kbs
Max Rate:       5312 kbs       960 kbs
Current Connection:
Current Noise Margin:       7.0 dB       10.0 dB
Current Attenuation:       50.0 dB       31.5 dB
Current Output Power:       19.5 dBm       11.9 dBm

so thats 10dB less attenuation and hence 2000Kbs fater than my old adsl line.

noise margin is 4-7 but i suspect that will go up...the trains you know.

10 days is the training period isnt it?

Rik

Congratulations, Dean, it looks like that's been a worthwhile exercise. The 'training period' is 10 days, but as all it really does is set the MSR & FTR, it's not hugely significant, the line will continue to adapt to conditions.

Yes just done a bt speedtest and my profile is 2000 at present :(

hopefully if the line proves stable that should go up

Rik

It often sticks on a new line, so may need a prod after a few days.

nothing worse than a disgruntled neighbour

hehe

True, we now tolerate each other.

on a side note does the refer a friend scheme work for phone transfers as well?

Excellent news, Dean. It just goes to show that the length of the line is not the only factor that impacts attenuation. :thumb:

Good to hear things are improving, Dean.  :thumb:

Just a shame the profiles stuck:-

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 4864 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  832 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1396 kbps

:rant2:

Rik

Slow throughput for the profile though, Dean. :(

I was doing a download at the time, i was just checking to see if the profile had moved.

usually does about 1800-1900 (about right for a 2000 profile

g7pkf

Whats your wish for 2009?

Mines either my exchange gets 21cn fully enabled or idnet offer LLU on my exchange, or we get fibre to the last mile

your going down a bad road and theres nothing like trying to take the Mods with you

hehe :out: :out:

g7pkf

Well caused even more disruption/confusion in the office.

Now transferring my other bt line (that used to have the broadband on) over to idnet.

Looked at 2 years worth of calls and can now safely say idnet line only will be the cheapest for my individual circumstances.

Transfer date is 18th lets see how this one goes.

Well just emailed support the line is stable but the profile is stuck. I should be on a 4000 profile i think?

Rik

Yes, 4000 would be correct for that sync, Dean. Classic stuck profile on a new line - should be easy to sort.

Been told :-

The IP profile will update automatically, this should happen within the next few days.

I will give it until tuesday next week (14days) then test again.

Rik

I find that, with BT, there's sometimes a yawning chasm between will and should. ;)

trouble is they also automatically stuck interleaving back on.

that makes no differance to my line, i have requested it be switched back off.

Rik

How does that compare with the original line, Dean?
Rik

g7pkf

500-1000 higher profile (i was on the cusp).

But to be honest lets give it a couple of weeks to stabalize.

I am getting 1-2 drops every couple of day's (used to be 1 a week on average)

Rik

I'll keep everything crossed for you, some of the time at least. ;)  :fingers:

ADSL Max is rate-adaptive, and so the only stablisation that may take place is an increase in your target SNRM.
