Hi
Does anyone know a reason why a router would reboot at will its done it twice recently its a SpeedTouch 585v6.

Thanks

old Bill

Last time my router rebooted itself was when BT did work on the line. It was a 585 as well. Did yours come from Idnet preconfigured ?

stevelondon

No i bought it last august and configured it meself its been ok till recently the last time it rebooted was this morning i ruled out anything else connected to the router cos they were all off. I have recently upgraded trhe firmware to 6.2.15.5 but the first time it randomly rebooted was before i upgraded

Nerval

How about a power dip?
I've had a couple where the lights dimmed slightly so I knew it was a dip, the puter stayed on, but the router dropped and rebooted.

Im not sure Nervs i didnt notice anything but i never thought of that  ::)

My Zyxel P660H occasionally reboots *lots* of times for no particular reason, but its not done it for a week or so, id wait and see if it sorts itself!

MoHux

Have you checked your SNR Margin?  If it dropped too low it would bomb out. :-\

But the SNR may have come back up.........??

My Speedtouch 546v6 dropped its connection recently,it was not a power out as the uptime was still correct.
When I restarted the SNR was 23 up/5.5 down.

A while later it came back to 23/11......it has taken a week to get the profile back up to normal too.

stevelondon

Snr has never changed  its always between 15 and 19 down  sync never changes either probably due to me being directly opposite my exchange 70 metres but then if it did it would just disconnect resync then reconnect i wouldnt think it would make the router reboot or would it?

MoHux

No, you're right I think Steve.  What was the weather doing at the time?  Any electrical storms around you at the time?

:)

No funny enough its been the best day in London for ages sunny all day

DorsetBoy

At exactly 19.06 my router rebooted and the synch dropped.

No power out,no weather problems.

Before Adsl max I never had this happen once, my router was left on and nothing changed in three years.

I had a problem last week, with the high winds causing the lights to flicker, the router didn't re-boot, but it did drop sync, I presumed because of a noise spike (oddly enough, I've had higher sync speeds ever since...). This doesn't appear to be the case for you, so I wonder whether the router could be over-heating?

Here's a tip for you Rik - your computer should be INDOORS, not in the garden!!

I'd be surprised if it were that.  Routers in general run hottish anyway, and my speedtouch is quite a bit cooler than some I've had.

I find I get little 'envelopes' of disconnections, then it will stay up for weeks (the connection, that is ;) ). I've come to the conclusion that it may relate to work at the exchange, adding capacity, or I've got someone nearby with a treadmill who only uses it periodically. Diagnosis of intermittent faults in comms is worse than almost anything else <sigh>.

Ive noticed it only gets hot if its laid flat if its on its side on the stand it doesnt get hot.

You can't beat a notebook out in the snow, it's a very envigorating way to surf and you keep system temperatures down!  ;D

I've come across a number of people having problems with the Netgear range when using them horizontally. Standing them vertically with the supplied 'brackets' can often help. Personally, I find it more stable horizontally, so I've just added 10mm of extra 'feet' to improve the air flow. Always runs cool for me.

Which I was just explaing to Nerv when you posted, Steve. The other way is to add 'feet' to give better air flow in the horizontal position.

Not done scientific tests like you Rik, () but I keep mine horizontal on a wooden surface and it gets no more than hand hot.
I did transfer one of them - the solwise I think - to horizontal on top of my metal puter case and it cooled significantly.  That got just hot enough to touch, but a couple more degrees and it would have been uncomfortable.  I asked around and that's what they do apparently.  If they needed to be cool, they'd have fans (or iced drinks).

You could always lean over and blow on it from time to time....provided the air wasn't hot, of course lol

Rik

Mine runs mildly warm in the horizontal position, though it probably helps that I turn the heating off and open all the windows. :)

I did think of blowing on it, but to be practical, I'd have to move it from in front of me...

I bought this new Speedtouch 546v6 because I suspected that some of the problems I had prior to joining IDNET might be my old router.
That was a Speedtouch 510 4 port and only had a few holes drillled in the base and that was getting HOT.

The new Speedtouch models have a casing that is very well ventilated (more holes than casing!) and the temperature never seems to rise.
As it can run for 3 weeks + without a problem I am more inclined to think it is a line/exchange/net fault .

Now if you want truly bizarre.............last night after the reboot my synch had dropped from 448/8096 to 448/6076,the SNR had changed from 24/11 to 19/6.5 and these figures were still the same this morning at @ 7.00 am..............yet a BT speedtest revealed that my throughput was 6355kbps and the profile was still at 7000kbps  ???

I rebooted again at 7.15 am and got a synch of 448/8096 again with a SNR of 23/9.5.

This is what I have now..............

It's not bizarre, it's BT. :( Mine lost sync due to what I assume, from the monitoring app, was noise (-2db margin). It came back 400k higher with a 9db margin. I think the big problem with Max is that it all comes down to what frequencies you pick up when you re-sync, and we have no control over that.
