What speed with the stats???

Hi guys, i have just moved house and have had a new BT line installed...in my old house (0.5 Miles nearer to my exchange) I was getting a downstream connection speed of 2648kbps. I know that my new line will need to stabilse and set it self to the optimum speed but is there anyway of telling what i should get by looking at my line stats?

Down 1248 kbps     up 192 kbps
Line Attenuation    63.5 db    31.5 db
Noise Margin    4.4 db    6.0 db

In the last 2 days my downspeed has increased from 1008kbps/ Any help advice gratefully recieved

Line attenuation is very high.  The others will tell you what you can expect but I wouldn't be expecting too much.

I am sure Rik et al will give expert advice but a 63.5db downstream attenuation usually means your a long way from the exchange . Some modems will not report a higher attenuation than 63.5db ( it's at the top of the G.DMT standard) so in reality it could well be higher. You need if possible to get a speedtest done this will show your BT line profile. The profile of your line gives you the maximum download speed possible. On a stable connection the profile will be slightly less than your sync rate,since your in a training period at present it could differ wildly.(widely )

Attenuation is high and that's holding you back. If it's genuinely due to the length of the line there's nothing you can do, but it could be a line fault.

thanks for your replies so far, i've been onto Samknows.com and its says i am 3.26km from my exchange, i managed to find the stats from w while back at my old place and they were:-

Old Line - feb 2008
speed down 1440 kbps up 448 kbps
Line Attenuation down 63.5 db up 31.5 db
Noise Margin down 15.3 db up 16.0 db

New Line
Down 1248 kbps     up 192 kbps
Line Attenuation    63.5 db    31.5 db
Noise Margin    4.4 db    6.0 db

My dload speed crept up to 2648kbps just before we moved November 2008

My noise margins are considerably lower on my new line, would this not improve anything?

Your old line was better, despite a similar downstream sync.

On your old line, it looks like your target SNRM was increased to provide stability. If this was not the case, you could've got quite a bit more sync.

Your new line has exactly the same attenuation, but it looks like it's more noisy. How are you connected? I take it to an extension socket? Do you have a BT master socket with a removable lower half? If so, carefully remove it and connect the router to the socket behind the plate, then re-post the stats.

here are my stats with my filter plugged into the test socket:-

Oh yer and Sebby my filter is connected directly to the master socket, not via an extension.

As Dean says, Matt, you're on a long line and things are not going to get better quickly. Are there any extensions connected to the faceplate of the test socket?

No extensions - my filter (and it's a good one - can't remember the make!) is plugged straight into socket and i have my phone plugged into the filter.

Our house is a brand new build and when the engineer came out he said that he connected us up via and old line that was no longer used anymore...i wasn't actually there when he did it and unfortunately my wife has little or no interest in the state of our internet connection, so understandably she didn't ask too many questions.

The main thing it works and browsing web pages are no problem, i think i've come to accept that i 'm never going to get a super quick internet connection...i would just like to get the best that i can for the time being.

It might just be worth fitting a filtered faceplate, Matt, eg:

It's a straightforward replacement, just remove the one you have and put this one in its place. It would be slightly neater and less prone to hoover damage. Beyond that, you have a very long line and unless BT build a new exchange, you're not likely to see much more in the way of speed.
