well, just got in and my son seems to have got us infected with MS Antispyware.......I think. Now i'm sure my other son had this same one last year on his system and it took a while to get rid. Malwarebytes seems to have done the trick now but my question is shouldnt my anti virus have picked it up, NOD32, if not im very surprised.

What do you have running in background to catch stuff like this.I thought I was well protected >:(

It's not just what you run, but where you go and what you click, Baz. I use NOD on all my machines and have never had a problem.

he does seem to know where he got it from, some site for music searches, he thinks. Im surprised that nod didnt spot it.will check later when he gets back to find all the info.I also have Spywareblaster but you need to start that when you want then you can close it and it runs in background or so the prog says. How can you get it to auto start with windows

If not, check the options within the program to 'start with Windows' or something of that kind. :)

Mine is set by default Baz, look in " preferences ", the free version will not allow " real time protection ", however.

In do you mean Malwarebytes OR Spywareblaster for the preferences bit.free  malwarebytes I know doesnt do real time but I was thinking of spywareblaster to start up auto. with it running you can see an entry in Task Manager but when you close it the entry disappears, fair enough thats what id expect but its claimed to run in the background....how can you tell

Surely SpywareBlaster is a "blocking" program and it's available all the time, you don't have to start it.

Thats correct and it works mainly by blocking the ActiveX component of malicious downloads so while it is a very good addition if you use IE it is a bit surplus to requirement with FireFox as that blocks most ActiveX by default. What you really need is something like Executable Lockdown, that will stop anything downloaded from running if you set it up to. GeSWall will also stop these malware dead, no questions asked. The real weak link is security software that asks for a decision by the user, Block or Allow.
The reason why Eset/Nod may have missed it is that this type of infection is mutating faster than the security companies can cope with.

Inactive was referring to Malwarebytes I beleive.

SpywareBlaster works in the background and doesn't appear in Task Manager or Sysinternals.  Lots of different components also run in svchost.exe without any obvious transparency.

Don't know how SpywareBlaster actually works but it's highly recommended on a lot of respected anti-malware help sites and doesn't seem to have any impact on the CPU.

And it's free.

True, I do have some in HSBC tho', that is also quite dumb, considering their latest saving rates of 1.75%  :eek4:

I reckon that they are now taking advantage of that fact Rik, it's well less than £50,000 so safe anywhere in the UK banks etc.
