quick question here. My daughter just rang saying her HD wont turn on.Its a maxtor onetouch lll. she has tried all the obvious like cables etc. turned it off for a while then back on but its not even making a noise. The LED light is on at the power pack but not the button on the HD itself.

Any ideas
Thanks

Rik

Sounds like a failure inside the case, Baz, either the HD itself or the circuit board. Is it under warranty?

thats what I thought first Rik but didnt want to say so  :(  dont know about the warranty she's checking for that now.

This IS her back up So.......its actually all her music etc but she plays them from here through her lappy.

Baz

if you get a replacement how do you stand with all the files etc thats on the drive

Rik

It's one of the reasons I make multiple backups, Baz, you always hope that you don't get a multiple device failure.

If they don't want the old one back (unlikely) then I would dismantle the casing and hope the dive has a normal sata connector...

You'll be starting from scratch. If it's not under warranty, it would be worth hooking the drive up to a PC and see if the files can be recovered.

would they view that as voiding the warranty? if though it's already broken?

So far, yes, but then I backup to four external and one internal HD. Haven't lost a file since 1989. :)

could the drive be fitted in a PC then or maybe a caddy and keep it external, if its just a boot up fault

Probably, usually opening the case voids the warranty. Once opened, who's to say if it was user malfunction?

Just a thought on this subject.

If you had say 1000 songs downloaded from iTunes on the HDD that died, are you allowed to re download those tracks for free? or do you have to pay again?

Rik

I don't think so, Vit. Apple expect you to make your own backups.

Sebby

Theoretically, any downloaded tracks from iTunes will be on your computer as well.

Rik

In my case, on several different drives. ;)

Surely in the even of loss, then you'd be able to download them again at no cost. If not shame on you apple!

Naxos allow you a week to re-download in the event of a problem but I don't think that Amazon do, Play.com allow you to re-download for a limited number of times. I always backup to an external harddrive AND a flash drive.

Rik

I don't think so, Vit, but I'm not 100% certain. Most d/l software comes with an optional extra payment to allow re-downloads in the event of loss. Apple, may offer such a scheme, I've never noticed.

Apple look on a download of lost songs as a second purchase.

Rik

Thanks for the confirmation, Steve. It's not that unreasonable, I suppose. If you lose a CD, you don't expect to get a second one free. I just make sure there's enough backups made. ;)
