Got pc running xp home, speedtouch 585 router (cable connected to computer) and laptop which i am trying to connect wirelessly to the pc  (not fussed about internet on laptop, just want to transfer files between pc and laptop).  The laptop has the network adaptor icon in the systray which shows that is connected but thats as far as i can get.

a bit vague i know but any ideas??

Have you got both computers in the same workgroup, and have you created sharing on the machine which you want to copy files from, Pup?

If you look at the adaptor properties you should see a list of available services if the box is empty I presume you click and then install

Have you tried running the wizard?

shoud it be set to optain ip address automatically on the laptop?

The quick answer is yes.

Normally your router has DHCP automatically enabled. DHCP is the bit that configures your network and gives the addresses out automaticaly . You can set the laptop ip address manually this has value if you always wish it to have the same IP address, useful for configuring port forwarding for P2P etc . If you configure an address manually to has to be outside of the range that the router's DHCP may allocate automatically otherwise you could have two devices with the same address.

Have you shared any folders, Pup?

As far as the internet not working, it sounds like a DNS issue. In the TCP/IP properties of the network adaptor, is DNS set to be obtained automatically as well?

pup

folders on laptop have been shared.
ithink its a tcp/ip/dns issue on the laptop, wont automatically assign them, any suggestions as to manual settings? and where would i put them in router?
