I have used the Linksys WAG200G for over a year now and they are excellent. I have one in UK and one in my house in Spain. The wireless coverage is excellent and they have no problem in holding a connection.

They have remote internet (https) administration, which is important to me as you can guess. Using the latest firmware there is no problem in the device reconnecting if the ADSL signal drops, which does happen from time to time in Spain. The one in Spain will stay connected quite happily for three months or more if I am not there. I can tell the ADSL signal has been interupted because the WAG200G will have acquired a new dynamic IP address from Telefonica the ISP.

UPNP supported as well if needed. Nice stand supplied for vertical mounting if required. Ensures that it runs cool. Highly recommended.

6jb,

Certainly haven't ruled out the Linksys WAG200G, particularly since they seem to be dirt cheap on ebay.  It seems to tick at least as many boxes as the Netgear or Speedtouch alternatives.

My WAG354G has given three years sterling service.

A few questions if you don't mind.

Is the system log any better than it used to be.  I want to be able to see any resyncs, etc and not have a log file that is full of firewall transactions and as a consequence is full after a few days.

Does it have a readily available ADSL statistics page.  It's there on the WAG354G, but only as a hidden page?

Does it still support SNMP?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Jaydub,

No problem, I'll do my best.

The system log is cr*p. Probably just the same as the one you are describing. Cluttered and difficult to filter well. Probably the worst point of the device.

It does support SMNP.

I'll attach a pic of the ADSL stats page. It's a bit basic but shows you your margins quite well. On a plus side, port forwarding is very easy to set up with lots of options. My main criteria, since installing the latest firmware, is that if there is any glitch with the ADSL connection or IDNet decide to re-balance their centrals, the router always reconnects perfectly.

JB,

That's great.

Sounds like the log hasn't changed at all. :(

The ADSL stsas page looks like the hidden page on the WAS354G, tarted up slightly.

Good to know the SNMP is there as well. :)

It uses a Broadcom chipset.

One of the big problems with this router is that the ADSL statistics are not displayed after logging into the web interface. It will tell you what rate you are connected at but not give you useful information like SNR for up or down stream. To do that you need to telnet into the device and learn a bit of unix code to get to know what you want.

It also has a problem with reconnecting after an ADSL loss or drop out.

There is one sitting as new in it's box here if anyone is interested.

PS - Don't forget that Ebuyer are renowned for only publishing positive reviews.

"I got mine, delivery from Ebuyer was really quick and it works great"

Surely they'd never do that... :eyebrow:

I've seen a fair few negative reviews on their site, but maybe they weren't on ebuyer products...

I must admit my last 5-6 things have come from there and somewhere i am one of the reviews. Never had any bother and usually next day delivery inc xmas eve this year for my tv (ordered at 21:00 on the 23rd arrived 10:00 next day)

Please don't get me wrong, I am not anti-Ebuyer. They did go through a bad patch a couple of years ago but since then they seem to have got their act together and their customer service has improved as well.

My last three orders, on which I chose free delivery within 5 working days, were all dispatched on the day they were ordered and arrived the very next day. That is excellent for no charge delivery.

On the subject of reviews however, I know a few people who have submitted poor reviews on items supplied by Ebuyer. The reviews remained on their site for a while before apparently being 'moderated' off.

what do you find so special about the 2700HGV. what do you need to look for if buying on EBay. is there a good model and bad model.whats 'hacked' about some of them.

Simon

My one bit of advice would be, as with anything on eBay, check the seller's feedback, and you should get a feel for the quality of item.  You shouldn't expect to pay more than about £20 delivered, and some can be had for a lot less.  Look for new if you can.  I'll leave the technical bits for the techies.  :)

They often give better performance on long phone lines.

On Ebay search for "2700HGV" and "Business Hub".  You show seek out B.N.I.B. ( Brand new in Box ) and "Dual SSID" ,

There is no need to buy one labelled as hacked , or anything similar, they all work without any messing about and pay less than £20 as Simon recommends

If possible avoid the latest version which has firmware BTv6.1.1.48

Just to provide closure.

Just bought a boxed Sky DG834GT from fleabay and will obviously need to remove the Sky firmware and replace with Netgear or (more probably) DGT firmware.

I've found a couple of guides on how to do this (which appear to offer slightly different advice) and would welcome any personal recommendations as to the best way of doing this.

Thanks
