Been experiencing slow, erratic speeds today, browsing is a real pain.  Anyone else?

Noise margin has dropped from the normal 11.5db to around 8.4db, would this be the cause?

just a little side note, yesterday was the same so I went to my sisters house, its about 200 yards around the corner.  Ran speedtests there and it was really fast, 6.7 meg.  Alot quicker than than mine which was running at about 1 meg.

no problems in Penzance,  :dunno:

The cause would be noise, which is not to do with the ISP. It sounds like your target SNRM has been increased previously, which suggests instability.

Could you post the stats from your router, and also run a BT speed test and post the results.

Down 8128
Up      448

Line Attenuation

Down 20db
Up      10db  (I believe Netgear routers incorrectly report this)

I've put a call in, and will follow up with an email directing them to this thread.  I suspect someone's fiddling about with a router, or something, and that it will be OK in the morning.  Haven't noticed any speed issues myself today.

Everything looks fine at your end. The lower SNRM is probably just due to Christmas lights or something, but it's not impacting your connection rate anyway. I would get in touch with IDNet about this one - it could just be exchange congestion, or perhaps work at your exchange, but it's worth getting them to look into it anyway.

vitriol

My friends and families connections all seem to be fine, getting their usual speeds so I kind of ruled out exchange congestion.

Sebby

Probably different VPs, though. See what IDNet say. :)

vitriol

Noise margin back up to it's usual 11.5db.  Speeds still slow and erratic, I will continue to collect results and call IDNet on Monday.  Thanks for the replies guys.

Simon

According to Simon this morning, the server seems to have developed some "intermittent instability", which he is investigating.

Is that affecting web browsing, though?

I thought it was only affecting their website. Still, IDNet will be able to say for sure on Monday. :)

Rik

Website only, afaik, Seb.
