Hi all, recent defector from Nildram (One of many it seems...) I've been looking around trying to work out what's what and tried the BT speedtester to ascertain what I could get speedwise and got this....

QuoteTest1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 832 kbps(UP-STREAM)  6272 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1885 kbps

Anyone able to explain why my connection rate is so much higher than my profile rate ???

TIA

Andy

Are you in your 10 day maxing period?

knock

I am but I'm not regrading to max the only change is higher upload. Would that put me into another training period?

Line stats are below, they are pretty much the same as they were before (If memory serves)

QuoteStatus      No Defect

Downstream       Upstream

Data rate (Kbps)
6272    832

Noise margin (dB)
11.7    11.0

Output power (dBm)
19.8    12.5

Attenuation (dB)
27.0    13.0

To my limited knowledge 2000 Kbps seems low for those stats and unusual so see a base 10 number crop up....

AvengerUK

Yes, 2000kbs is a bit low for those stats!

You might be in another training period - although i dont know myself, someone else will tell you ive no doubt ;)

Otherwise it may be the case of the recent bad weather, which means you just have to leave your connection alone (so its stable) for 3 days or so.

knock

If I'm in training it's not a problem but my concern is the profile speed might have been set by the previous ISP?

Something else I feel I should mention is that after making the change it's like a whole new internet with IDnet, quick responsive and streaming media doesn't constantly buffer  ;D

Be nice to know if there is more potential to unlock though

Spoke to support and they say I am in the training period so it's a waiting game. Resynced my router this morning and it's up at 6.8mbit so fingers crossed my connection has a bit more to give than the 2mbits it's on now :whip:

Don't worry, the rate adaptation with Max is ongoing, so provided you stay synched at 6.8 for three days, you'll get a Profile speed of 6Mb and your actual downloads will be somewhere between 5.5 and 5.9Mb.

You might like to have a look at this post by James.  He explains how the thing works - but basically Max constantly monitors your sync rate and adjusts to falls in sync within a couple of hours, and adjusts to rises in sync after three days. Doesn't matter what you did with your previous ISP.

Knock who?
Either I know you from a different forum or I know the guy who you are hotlinking you sig/av from

Just had a snap power cut and the router has resynced at 6.5 and according to the succession of links I followed I am under the threshold for the 6000 profile I now seemed to have acquired! >:( Any tips for a higher resync other than do it in the early morning?

Did a speedtest or 3 and this is the best....

QuoteDownload Speed: 5483 kbps (685.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 668 kbps (83.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Not done any optimising on the connection so if it stays like this and maybe even gives a bit more with some tweaks obviously I'll be very happy :D

You from Plusnet then?

sallyandjames

Nerv is an Ex Plusnet customer - I'm a current one.

Don't know the guy whose avatar and sig I used, and he doesn't give his name on his site so its hard to credit him. :-[

His site is http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gtg818f if anybody cares....

I know he was never that bothered about it being used in the past. Only asked as I've not been on the same forum as him for a year or two though, didn't know if he had relocated to blighty!
