Ive been trying different resolutions on my  17 inch LCD , if i put it in 1024x768 which i always ran the 17 inch CRT at it looks  awful as the icons are huge and so is the text.
If i put it in the next up (which is its highest) the icons and text are much smaller, at first i didn't like it and i felt like it was making my eyes strain.
I also found it very bright and its taken a while to get a good balance of brightness, contrast and Gamma.
Today i have tried moving the screen to wards the front of the desk and to the back and i think i have found the perfect spot.
Is it because i have always used CRT's and never used a LCD that its taking time to get used to?
I find it great for gaming and it looks  great at 1280X1024.

You should always run LCDs at their native resolution (slider as far to the right as possible) due to the static nature of the pixels. The simplistic way it was explained to me is that you are trying potentially to get a grid of 4x4 make a picture of 3x3 so it gets blurry as some of the pixels aren't really sure what they are meant to be doing

I would agree knock, if I use anything other than the native resolution on my LCD monitors it looks awful. maxping do you have a choice of a digital or analogue input? I run two identical 20" LCD's  from the same craphics card, one fed with each type of signal the digtial one is noticeably better.

Yup ,run at native setting then change default text and icon sizes to suit.

Its plugged into the DVI-I socket on the vid card.

I'm getting used to the smaller text and icons and its growing on me slowly, its taken a lot of mucking about to get it how i like it,well worth the effort.

I knew i had something to tell you , of the 3 that i listed in the thread they had none  ::)
I ended up paying more than i wanted for a Philips but i just had to have it once i saw it on the display.

Its the first Monitor i have seen with a glass front, it has a special coating to stop it reflecting when its on , when its off it  looks like a black mirror with a deep purple tint to it, really smart looking.click here for specs

The black edges you can see are not plastic this is all glass.

I have already dont the clear type thing thanks  ;)

stevelondon

Ok well make sure u dusty it regular to take advantage of the clearness  ;D :out:

Very nice Max, I like the look of it, glass front is a real bonus too.

Not cheap, as you say,  but probably worth the extra.

Thanks.

lol  I don't think that's the monitor Max  ;D

Great looking display though.  You'll not be disappointed

ps didn't know about cleartype, and that's made my already good display even better.

cavillas

Have you got the optimum refresh rate correct?  Usually 60Hz for LCD but sometimes 75 can be better if the monitor is capable of it.

Normally the higher the Hz the better. Although that said, because of the different way in which LCD/TFTs and CRTs generate the picture the Hz shouldn't matter as much for the LCD screens.

Have you got hold of the Clear Type tuner applet? It's here, and can make a world of difference.

Is this not true then?

PowerToys only work with U.S. English regional settings.

Rik

MS thinks we use them, it works on my machines. :)

OK ta, will give it a go

Nerval

Well it made no difference for me.
Praps cos I'm not using the US English option

Rik

What's the file version, size and date?

Mine is 7.4.262.0, 2.47MB, 22/11/2006.

I have used it on both XP Home4 and XP Pro, and SP1/2 with no problems (all ATI graphics cards). In practice, I can't see what difference the region makes, except the language of the interface, it's only tweaking the video driver.

Same version.
But just setting the cleartype on in the first place made it so good that it probly was the best in the first place so tweaking it couldn't make it better.
Amazing that I'd gone all these years without knowing about cleartype.

Only getting you going Rik  ;D

Rik

That's OK. Now change your default font to Verdana and really see the difference!

Nerval

Yes, been using Verdana as my default since Noah was a lad.  Great font.

Rik

That should really show up with the tuning, try switching to MS Sans Serif and see if you notice a difference.

The monitor max refresh is 60Hz if i use the display options in control panel , in CoD2 i can set it to 75Hz in options , will this change the refresh or is it still set to 60Hz even though the game says its 75Hz?

Rik

I really don't know, but I doubt you will notice the difference between 60Hz and 75Hz on an LCD screen. Now, on a CRT...  ;)

I had a play but couldn't better the standard setting so uninstalled it.

I'm beginning to feel alone. ;)

I gave it another go after realising i didn't close the browser after i used the tuner.
It does work and i set mine the the fattest (for want of a better word) i could find and its much easier on the eye.
