Migrating in

Hi all

I'm one more Pipex user sniffing around  ::) I'm currently on their 1MB package (although the line I think Syncs at two) and have been with them since getting ADSL some six years ago when they were a damn good business like ISP. The amount of traffic limiting and adverts with chest hair has just got silly however, it is now impossible to watch streaming content (i.e Youtube, launch etc) (although I'm not sure what this has to do with the Chest hair).

So, some questions

1. Do I migrate straight in onto a Max package, or do they have to put me on a 1 or 2 meg and then Maxify (TM) the line?

2. I work from home - so downtime due to the migration would be a real problem, how likely is this and how can I avoid any :p ?

3. My Draytek Vigor 2800 is currently reporting SNR 29 and Loop Att 19 - I'm aware that this matters - but what it means for my adsl max speed I have less of a clue.

4. Does IDNet use a hostmask with your name in it? (i.e like Demon) - I'm not keen on this at all

5. I haven't the first clue how much bandwidth I actually get through, are there any free or open source apps I can install on my machines to measure this off the tops of your heads? I'm on the net 8+ hours a day so ought really to know my usage before I move!

6. With the bandwidth usage cap - what happens if your IP is attacked (i.e DDOS?) Does anyone have any experience on this? Its been my main reason not to move on to a "limited" package over the last few years as I've seen this happen in the web serving world multiple times.

yeah...thats enough for now I think, sorry  ::)

TIA

Nerval

You can montor your bandwidth usage with the free utility Netmeter,
downloadable Here.

With the rest of your query, since it is obviously important to you, I'd ring CS on their free number 08000 267 237  and talk it over with them.  The people who can answer you on the forum have in general no official status.

Hi ThinIce

I agree with Nerv, give CS a call to discuss your needs.

However...

1 - When I moved to my last ISP, I migrated and moved to Max in one.

2 - Downtime in a migration is usually unnoticed, and tends to happen in the small hours. BT are capable of screwing it up though (and did for me) in which case you will discover one of the benefits of IDNet, the great support.

3 - You have oodles of noise margin and low attenuation, especially as you are synched at 2Mbps, so I'd expect you to see at least 6Mbps on Max, probably more. Note that some people have found Draytek routers less good on Max than on fixed-rate ADSL. The best results seem to come from matching the router chipset to the DSLAM, though that's not always easy to find out.

On the subject of usage, it's not how long you're connected but what you do, so running Netmeter or something similar is key. Note that most utilities of this sort record all LAN traffic, so you may have to adjust the figures a bit.

Finally, if you check out the IDNet site you will see that a number of their packages are available with enhanced care, if you consider your connection 'mission critical'.

I'd phone CS as Nerval says and they should be able to help you.

Re downtime: The only downtime you have is the time it takes for you to enter your new username and password into your router! Switchover normally happens early in the morning (often before 6) i believe.

Hi ThinIce,
I use a Draytek Vigor 2800g when I was on 2m line on previous ISP I had stats of SNR margin 31 and Loop Att. 21 on MAX I have a sync of 8128000 and 9.5 SNR margin and 21 Loop Att. router has been up for over 3000hrs and only lost connection twice since June last year, when IDnet have been working on their systems. I get around 6m actual speed generally, but this can vary a bit.

Hi ThinIce
Like others for me it was just a matter off putting in idnets username and password that was the only downtime for me about half a minute the only difference for me was my migration took place at about 4.30 pm ish, as for the max package idnet migrated me in on 1meg the next evening about 9.30 pm ish i was regraded to Max as they said thats the way they do it (i dont know if it was because i was migrated in from LLU) i dont know if its changed now.   ;)
