My brother inlaw has moved to Turkey and the phone calls are starting to cost. I have heard about Skype but know very little about it. Can anyone tell me how it works ect and if Idnet supports it ?

To be honest old Bill, I have no hands on experience, but I cannot see why IDNet shouldn't support Skype, or any VOIP system.

I do know that there are cheaper VOIP's out there.

If you want to save money on standard ( non VOIP ) telephone calls, you could try;

http://www.telediscount.co.uk/index2.php

They charge 5p per minute any time to a Turkish Landline, no sign ups or anything like that, just a lo-rate number.
Anything and everything that I post on here is purely my opinion, it ain't going to change the world, you are under no obligation to agree with me, it is purely my expressed opinion.

If Bill's b-in-law has broadband, they could both move to VOIP of course.

BB in Turkey, last time I was there, the power supply went off about 4 times a day.

Seriously, yes they can both move to VOIP subject to Bills B-i-L having BB.

Try a Google on;   VOIP,.... the generic name for Voice over internet Protocol.

Thanks for the replies. Is it easy to set up. What do I need to buy ?

RJM

With Tesco the handset costs about a tenner - comes with CD to load the software.  You can order "on-line" or go to a local store to purchase.

You just plug the handset into a USB slot and away you go.

Calls between Tesco VOIP's are free of charge - so, especially good if you have relatives living in New Zealand for example.

Here is the link that will be able to explain in full for you:-

Skype is free. All you need is a microphone and (if you want) a webcam - but remember to keep an eye on your bandwidth if you get into long video chats.

I use skype all the time. If both you and your brother in law have skype, it's free to call one each other. If your BIL doesn't have skype, then you will need to put credit on your skypeOut account, calls to turkey vary between 4.5pence per min, to 13p per min for mobiles.
