That would be when you had your weekly bath in the kitchen and shared the water with with the dog, I suppose?
Cue for stories about When I were a lad I slept on newspaper in the coal shed........

I smell middle class roots there.

In reality the coal was in the bath, the newspaper was torn up for use in the outside loo and the dog was in the pot on the black leaded range!

Nerval

You blackleaded your range?  Now that IS posh! ;D

Remember the newspaper too.  ::)

You have a point.

I was thinking that, if my great-great grandfather came back to life, he could have visited my grandfathers house (this would be around 1950) and very little, if anything would have seemed strange to him. OTOH, if my grandfather came back to life and visited this house, most things in it would be totally alien to him. The rate of change is really accelerating, even my father, who died 22 years ago, would have problems with a lot of the technology in the house.

I wonder if it will be the same for today's teenagers - or whether there is a kind of base-line of savvy that makes you more adaptable to whatever will come along?  All the teens I come across are pretty smart in technology terms and just dive into any new stuff.

Rik

Good question and one I don't have an answer for. When I first got my BBC Micro, I was so impressed that I was able to write a program to display national flags (I got more sophisticated later ;) ). I didn't even dream of the day when I would be able to run a digital darkroom, or fly around the world with Google Earth. Given the changes we have seen in the past 25 years, I'm not sure that even today's teenagers will be 'future proof' as technology changes.

It's quite interesting to see some of the old documentaries from, say, the 60s, predicting what computers would mean for us. Generally, they got it totally wrong.

And speaking of today's teenagers, did you see a series called Sweet Sixteen, just finished this week. Camera followed pupils and teachers at Northumberland Park School, in the shadow of Spurs stadium.

We didn't just see the bright kids, but it was impressive to see what the teachers were doing in a hard area.  Most of all it was the kids who came over as alert and quick and likeable - not necessarily academically, but just getting on with each other so well.

Seriously tho', I am quite a safety oriented individual, but I have never, ever heard of a mains adapter catching fire, the router itself is low voltage, so no problem with that.

I know it is all about risk, but I honestly reckon that a Router/Modem falls in to the extremely low risk category.

Oh and the bit about the " gas lamps " was in part true, we only had one power point in the whole house, and electric lighting downstairs, gas wall lights upstairs.

How times change. ;)

Well you'll just have to leave it in the microwave for  longer (with your dishcloth)  ;D

And I can still remember the man coming to our street every day with his long pole, and lighting the street lights.  ;D

To be honest i have no choice in the matter as i have to use a short extension cable to the pc, i usually tidy it away at the end of the day so no one trips over it as my pc is in the kitchen.
I still would probably turn it off at the end of the day if i had the option to leave it on or off.

The Two Ronnies did a skit on Mastermind, the speciality subject being "Answering the question before last".  Very clever and in their usual 'comedy based on words' style

stevelondon

I bet punch wishes he never asked if anyone switches their router off now lol  ;)

Rik

Is that what this post is about?  ;D :out:

Cant find that one but this is worth a look - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz2-ukrd2VQ

Rik

That one was a classic too. I remember the 'question before' sketch well, it was very cleverly crafted, I assume by Ronnie B.
