Failed Windows Update

I had a notification this morning that there was an "Important" Windows Update re Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack and .NET Framework...... I've tried three times so far to install it and each time it fails at 99% with Error Code 80070026. I don't really understand anything about this and would be grateful for any help. I'm running Vista Ultimate and I've never had an Update fail before.

I couldn't find any solutions out there, Noreen, only other reports of the problem and the suggestion that people raise it with MS (it's free).

I would be inclined to forget it for now, Noreen, and try again later, or tomorrow. They are bound to be aware of the problem.

The only thing I've noticed that needs it on mine, is Sony Soundforge, an audio editing suite.

May be Vista related, it's just installed OK on my XP machine and also installed with no problem on my Home Server a couple of days ago.

I am trying it now on the vista laptop its taking ages to install,went fine on the server yesterday.

Possibly try deleting the update from the Windows\SoftwareDistribution\downloads folder then download it again

No help installed ok on my Vista laptop, you could try turning AV off whilst its installing and do as Glenn said

Mine installed fine on my Vista laptop last night without turning off antivirus of UAC. No help I know!

My desktop hasn't yet been offered the update.

Downloading and install the patch manually - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7&displaylang=en

I've had some issues with 'HyperV Server' and windows updates and have had to install quite a few manually recently :-(.

I've four folders, all with long names of numbers and letters and all dated this morning in Windows\Software Distribution\ Downloads. Should I just delete those folders?

Tried again this morning, renamed the items in the download folder and turned off NOD32 but got the same result. However I later restarted and it went straight into a check disk saying that some files needed to be checked. Not sure now whether I had something wrong that also caused the Update to not install or whether the failed Update had caused a problem.

That's the annoying thing with these programs, unless you time the puse key just right, you never do know what was going on.

Allegedly its here in Vista from Control Panel classic view Admin tools

It's located in Event Viewer -> windows protocols -> application, item "wininit".
Alternatively, when running next scandisk, just insert USB flash drive before the scan. After Vista reboots, you will find the log file in the root of USB drive

Whether this is correct I don't know as on XP today

I installed it this afternoon, but of course that was in XP. It did take a long time to install, with both cores being heavily loaded.
