How to improve ping?

Hey

i know there is an ongoing ping problem at the moment but i just tried resetting the PPP and the pings are back to "normal".

when i say normal however, i mean prior to the ping problem, not back to how they HAVE been


there was a time about 6 months ago (?) where I could happily get sub 30ms pings ingame and ping idnet.net with a good 30ms max ping



My current "setup" only gets me say 40ms at the lowest  could it have been down to me getting the 2wire? Perhaps its time I got a filtered adsl faceplate? Ringwire?

Phone connection, filter which came with 2wire, adsl line supplied with 2wire, 2wire with SBC firmware, Ethernet going from downstairs to my room (10m cat5e), to Speedtouch 580 acting as hub, standard length ethernet to PC

It looks like you're interleaved, Sam, which perhaps you weren't previously. Have a word with IDNet and see if you can get it switched off. That should reduce your pings significantly.

A filtered faceplate, though probably not strictly necessary with your good stats, is always good to do, imho. If you can't site the router at your master socket, remove the ring wires instead.

Well, luckily we only have one phone connection point in the house meaning that the ringwire can be kept intact (meaning its also the master connection?)

Is the ADSL nation filter faceplate still considered the one to get?

Could you provide me with some advantages it provides in hope that the parents will "invest" in it - saving me cost  hehe


I could be interleaved? dang  Is there anything I can do to provide a more stable connection in the future to prevent being intereaved again?

If you've got a master socket and no extensions, a filtered faceplate won't help. However, what I would say is that a better filter, such as the ADSL Nation XF-1e, may be a good idea. For neatness, you could just go for the faceplate anyway! I think the ADSL Nation XTE-2005 is the best.

Other than that, you should have a stable connection.

Deary me lol but i know I can get 30ms without this spike. But still after lower pings than 30ms if possible

Probably not possible, Sam. Check your error count and see if it's high, but beyond that it's down to your exchange and distance. My pings were running at an average of 23ms this morning, currently it's nearer 30ms.

perhaps when the time comes a new router may play nicer with my line (sure my speedtouch gave really low pings but kept kicking the bucket)
