page scrolling in FF

notice3d this recently when using FF on some sites with images or photos etc. when scrolling the page or using the scroll bar button the page is jumpy, not smooth if that makes sense. tried the same sites in IE and they are ok.

as an example, some one posted a link to a game on this site. can you try that in FF and see what you get please. I'm on version 3.0.6

That page is nice and smooth for me. I was thinking maybe its graphics drivers or processor power, but seeing that it is fine in IE I don't really know what to suggest!

Edit: If you go Tools, Options, advanced, general, there is a box 'Smooth scrolling'. Turn it either on or off depending on what its on now and give it a try then.

no its no different with it turned on Lance. was off before and the other option 'use autoscrolling' was on.tried all combo's and still the same.

I've tried the page in both IE and Firefox and it seems to scroll very fast in IE too but in rapid steps whereas in FF it steps much more slowly. I checked the advanced settings and IE was already set to smooth scrolling but FF wasn't. When I changed FF to smooth scrolliing it still scrolled in very small steps but very very slowly.

Sometimes I find sites 'judder' if they've got loads of graphics, usually ads, especially if some of them don't fully load properly. A browser restart sometimes does the trick, but that site you linked to is fine here with Sea Monkey, Baz.

dont know which one but I added some more to adblock plus from that page and its made some new filters all of which are background and it seems to have worked.

its looking that way Simon. just been on google maps and it was bad in FF, ok in IE but as soon as I disable Adblock Plus in FF it was ok.seems to be defeating the object of having it really if you get cr*p scrolling when its in use

thats a shame I think Adblock is a good add on

Been using AdblockPlus for a few years now and it's never slowed anything down.

I wonder if Baz has installed something which adds hundreds of entries to the Hosts file?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc is where to find it.

Tried doing something clever with the Hosts file myself a few years back and it made browsing a hellish experience, even though the advice was from a reliable source.

Just a thought.

Thats sounds big, Baz, below is the contents of my etc. directory my hosts file is only 1Kb.

so when you say added something, how would I have done that? as an update maybe or is it a list which adblock uses that is needed.

Earlier I uninstalled Adblock, restarted and tried a new download of it but it looked exactly the same, same filters etc.

There are several blocklists that can be used in conjunction with Adblock Plus, though I suspect they're much the same size.

As has already been said, 175KB is very large. What to look for is difficult to say, but lots of IP addresses and hosts on the one file is a start. The most basic one called "hosts" has only one IP address and host name: "127.0.0.1 localhost". If one of the files has tons of IP address, that's a likely culprit.

To view a file, right click it, select Open and choose Notepad to view. Before deleting any entries though, be absolutely certain they're not required..

just had a look and there are 2 files of the same size, one is called 'hosts' the other is called 'hosts.msn'. both have text in them starting with
'Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy' and seem to contain the saame entries, loads of single lines starting with 127.0.0.1 then a web address, some of them with obvious sexual reference.

I no longer use spybot search and destroy.

When you first install Spybot, it's one of the things you can choose to install or not. Copy and paste the large host files into another folder and add ".old" to the file name. Then go into the originals and delete everything other than what's in Rik's (and mine), select Save (not Save as), restart your browser and see if it makes a difference.

that didnt seem to make any difference so I tracked down the drivers for the graphics, just on board stuff and downloaded the ones listed there and it looks ok so far. When I checked on windows update after this latest download, it said there was a new driver for the graphics. Looks like the one I just got and installed was an earlier driver than what I already had in so dont know whether to update again or not.

Did you get it from the motherboard maker's website? Quite often, they have a very old drivers. If it's nVidia, for example, it's better to get it direct from nVidia.
