dont know why I'm asking this must be having one of those 'just cant remember' moments, when putting in new memory that is Dual channel do you need to alter the bios 

just cant think

It usually auto-detects, Baz, at least, in my experience.

thanks Rik, that was my first thought. just asking as its been in a while but seemed to slow done over the past two weeks or so. wondered if Id missed something

Have a peer at the BIOS, see if anything looks awry, Baz, or run something like Memtest. If you're getting the right total, though, it's unlikely to be an issue.

You shouldn't need to change anything in the BIOS. What you do need to do is ensure that you have the RAM in the correct sockets. On your motherboard, you'll probably have 2 pairs of slots. You'll have 2 colours on each pair, e.g. a yellow and a brown and pair one, and a yellow and a brown on pair 2. If you have 2 sticks of RAM, ensure they're in the same colour on the 2 pairs. I hope that makes sense.

You can check if you are running in dual channel mode using CPU-Z (see attached).

Sebby. bit of an old-ish mobo i'm afraid only have two slots so its ok there but the CPU-Z, which I remembered I had when you posted shows it a dual memory. just got the latest version

It should do, but quite often the increased performance is only 10-20% (I can't remember the reason).

It's the same with SLi graphics, you only get 40 - 50% increase out of the 100% increase in GPU power
