E-Mail questions

Hello, just a quick question.

Regarding the email system that IDNet uses -- is there a good way to keep an eye on the capacity used? It's slightly embarrasing to only know we're full when a business customer contacts us complaining they can't email us. Alternatively is there any capacity upgrade options?

Hi esh. You can't upgrade the inclusive email facility, ie @idnet.com, but IDNet do have other packages more tailored to business use.

How are you accessing the mail, POP, IMAP or webmail?

If you use webmail, it tells you how much storage space is used. There is no way to do so via an email client using POP3 or IMAP, afaik. How come you're keeping so much mail on the server? Perhaps it might be an idea to download it to an email client and put a backup system in place. Just a thought.

or dependant on your requirements setup your own email server ? http://www.zimbra.com ... I am a moderator for them so a blatant plug. And yes they do a free community edition aswell

We run a lot of attachments since 100+ page manuals are made frequently and we dislike wasting paper ;-)

Most of the recent emails are kept on the server so they can be accessed from multiple machines (it's IMAP) and laptops from when working on the road. All the mail clients are currently Outlook. For myself it is not so much a problem, but there are others who are not quite so technically oriented. I've set up a system where people can archive old email onto the RAID-enabled server, but often this is forgotten, and people don't know/realise until they get bemused phone calls. It'd just be nice to actually get an auto-email from IDNet either when near/at capacity or every x days. Just an idea. [Edit: or the RSS feed?]

I'd prefer to avoid setting up a mail server myself. They are quite a chore. I guess I will just stress to people to keep an eye on things :-)

Would it not be easier to host the attachments so that they can be downloaded at will, ie send the URL rather than the attachment?

If not, have a word with support and see if they can offer a solution.

Yes, I'm working on a hosting system. It has to be secure though, as some of this stuff is legal documentation. These things take time...
