Anyone got any good apps for the iPhone?

Sebby

A few of my favourites:

TubeDeluxe (or TubeStatus if you don't want/need the paid version)
MMS
Facebook
AccuWeather
Palringo
Flixster
Shazam (amazing!)
AroundMe
eBay
Urbanspoon
Google Earth

Rik

For the iNnocent amongst us, Seb, apart from eBay, MMS and Google Earth, what do they do. :)

Facebook is self-explanatory. I don't use it much, but it's easier than having to go on the website.

AccuWeater is again self-explanatory. I like it because it can detect your current location using the iPhone's GPS. 8)

Palringo is an IM client, which can do all the major ones like MSN, AIM, etc. I don't use it much, but it can be handy.

Flixster gives you cinema listings. You can select from a list of cinemas, or use the iPhone's GPS to find your nearest cinema. You can also watch the trailer for every film.

Shazam is brilliant. If there's a song playing, for example on the radio, and you're not sure what it is, open Shazam, hold your phone by the speaker for 5-10 seconds. The clip is then analysed and it tells you what it is!

AroundMe is great for if you're out and you want to find your closest bank, restaurant, etc. Again, it uses the iPhone's GPS.

Urbanspoon recommends restaurants based on your location, the type of food you want, and how much you want to spend.

Rik

The last three I'd use - I just tend to look outside for the weather. :)

Is the main reason for the GPS, so that the companies/government can track your movements down to 5m rather than a mobile cell?

No, it's so that iPhone owners singing the Whiffenpoof Song can find their way home. ;D

I can't see them getting bigger. The Kindle app certainly looks interesting. I'll give it a try.

I like iChing.

I iChinged today to see how my day would go and got a 'Ji Ji', which intimates progress and success in small matters.

But I also got 'Chun' which, amongst other things, tells me there will be an advantage in appointing feudal princes. I'm off out to look for some in a minute.

Am I right in thinking that this new app allows people read a book on their phone? Would anyone really want to do that?

I maybe am old fashioned but I like books to be books Noreen, I can never comfortably read for prolonged periods on a pc screen anyway.

Are any of you aware how many of these apps build in Pinch Media to track usage?  It's rather like Google Analytics on steroids and can secure data as to not only timed usage of the app but also your iphone UUID and location tracking.  I certainly wasn't aware of it and, so far as I am aware, none of the apps inform you that your usage is being tracked in this manner.

See here and also here.  The latter is a site worth exploring.

Although you can disable location tracking on the phone I can't see a way of disabling transmission of the other stuff since, unlike a desktop machine there is no outgoing firewall.  Its ability to track location and relate it to UUID makes Google look pretty amateurish doesn't it.

FWIW I don't doubt the Palm Pre and MS mobile apps will also be into this stuff.

Redlaser is a great app it scans barcodes of things  and searches Google and Amazon for the cheapest options, you can then choose what one you want and go straight to the website to buy it, I used it in Homebase and saved a Tenner on Wilkinson Sword garden shears  :thumb:

My other favourite is convertbot very handy it has a great interface and will convert anything you care to think of really, there is a site link to that here http://tapbots.com/convertbot/

Also I use WeatherPro very accurate, shows dewpoint, satellite images and Radar as well, which you can see play up to the hour, and a seven day ahead forecast, it also has a live wind speed indicator. Great app
