To restart or not to restart??

Hi guys and girls!!

Since joining the EXCELLENT Idnet sevice a few weeks ago. I have been maintaining a very stable 3.5mb connection with my router synching at 4096 down and 800 Up.

I have recently noticed a slight speed drop and with a speedtest confirming that my download speed is now at 3mb and router synching at 3776 down and 800 up. There must have been a router restart overnight or something else??

I did a router restart to see if I could resynch at the higher rate. Unfortunately after to router restarts it is sticking at the reduced rate. I dont want to restart my router to many times as this my cause BT to drop my profile further (which I think is now at 3000).

I know its only a slight drop in speed, but I know that you all share the same hunger for the best speed possible when it comes to broadband!!
So the question is, should I keep restarting on a daily basis to get my speed back up or will it go back up by itself??

Thanks for your time.
From an extremely happy Idnetter!!  ;)

I got the same problem Scorpio.
Was synching at 5960 till I changed my RJ11 cable to see what would happen and it's down at 5300 now.
So I turn it off every night and on every morning to give it a chance to speed up.

Might just do it on its own (I think Rik says his did, but I've never seen it myself) , but more likely if you restart it each day.

I've always found early morning - 6 or 7 am gives me the better sync speeds.

Good Morning Nerval,

I might do another restart tomorrow around this time. Very nervous about restarting too many times because I do not want BT to drop my profile...

Thanks

Nerval

Morning
I tend to give it three or four tries about this time each day till I get the sync I want, and that's OK.  That shouldn't cause your profile to drop any lower.

Ten in an hour is supposed to be the magic figure that causes Max to drop you, so avoid going near that

Oh ok,

Gonna try another restart in a mo then....

And have a look at This Table that shows which Profile rate you get for each sync rate.
This will tell you whether it's worth trying for a faster sync, or whether you're just in the bottom of a profile band and a few hundred kbps won't improve your profile (which limits the download speed).

Now synching at
3872    800

So according to the table I am just under the rate to acheive 3500 BRAS profile which is why my previous sync of 4096 was giving me 3500...

Nerval

"just under" lol
famous last words!!!!  ;D Many's the time I was just under the rate for 5.5Mb from my 5Mb profile, and ended up on 4.5 instead, not daring to do any more resyncs that day

I suspect it's to do with the cold weather (?) but even early morning syncs at present are a good 500k below what they were a couple of weeks ago.

Rik

Just noticed this. In fact, cold weather should lower resistance in the cables and thus, to a lesser extent, impedance. So, in theory, ADSL is faster in cold weather. However, all the people staying at home produced more traffic, hence more crosstalk, so we're back where we started.

How do people at home make more traffic than when they are at work using their computers?  ???

When i'm at work i tend to be using databases or spreadsheets. When i'm at home I tend to be on the internet! I also download 'stuff' at home, not at work. Therefore, I use the internet more at home then work, even though I probably use my work computer more.

From where I sit Lance reading around the forums during the day, it's difficult to tell whether a large proportion are at work, or at home.   ::)

You can often see time patterns in the postings, Mo. Us silver surfers hang around most of the day, while other users can be seen to be in here first thing in the morning, at lunchtime and then in the late afternoon/evening.
