Im after setting up a powerline network to get rid of these damn long ethernet wires. Are there any bundle deals going? I take it if i got another one and so on I can carry on expanding my network via extra powerline thingies? Seems a good idea

Im looking for 200mbps ones (I think) as I may be streaming HD content...well I will be from pc to ps3 (at this point in time) - perhaps to a media pc downstairs too.

200mbps should be adequate =/

Thanks! Dont think ill need encryption..I mean if someone is in your house plugged into the network then you deserve to be hacked  :P (unless the encryption is for other reasons such as crossed lines with a neighbour..in that case ill take it!)

Rik

I think the encryption is to stop 'external' leakage, Sam. I haven't seen any deals lately, probably time to hit Google.

Sam, roughly 1 in 3 houses share the same phase electricity from the substation in your area. The encryption is to stop others seeing your data and sharing your internet connection.

encryption is a good idea then!!!

who would you say generally make the better ones? Zyxel? Solwise? These are going to be a long time investment.

is there a limit as to how many you can use? potentially I could have one for every room in the house - do they increase latency or anything at all? they seem as useful as wireless..without the downsides!

Rik

AFAIK, Sam, there's no limit, but a check of the specs would tell you for sure. Solwise, Devolo and D-Link get regular mentions - I believe Gary uses D-Link. I suspect there is some cost to latency, just as there is when using wireless against ethernet.

Xyzel is a good make. I would have thought the Solwise ones would be good as well - Solwise has been going for years and their reputation is quite good, as far as I'm aware.

Glenn

Comtrend will only allow you to use other Comtrend units, or so I have read somewhere.

I am looking at getting these

Latency only seems to be 2ms, depending on distance of course

Will they work on an extention cable or does it need to be directly into the mains?

Sebby

I've always been under the impression that they should go directly into wall sockets, but it often works in extensions.

Rik

They don't seem to have a FAQ, Sam, but I have heard in the past that they don't like extensions and surge protectors.

Ok cool

£77 is the cheapest I could get the two for

Steve

They all seem very expensive at the moment. I got 2 Zyxel PLA-401 for just under £50 in November. What's going on!!!

Rik

Thinking about it, Sam, I'm sure it's Linksys not D-Link that Gary uses.

Rik

We don't seem to hear that many reports on Linksys routers, Sam.

Gary

I use the Linskys ones, Rik, a bit expensive but they are 4 port and 200mbs, and work brilliantly http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=7367
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Rik

D-Link, Linksys, my brain scrambles the names. :)
