Baz

could some one shed  any light on this please.

its the stats from my daughters router.had slow speeds lately. I think its a netgear router, kids, :dunno:

shes in Manchester and well, im not ;D

ISP is Utility warehouse or some one through them.struggling to do a BT test at the moment

ADSL Link     Downstream     Upstream
Connection Speed    19056 kbps    1020 kbps
Line Attenuation    16.0 db    5.3 db
Noise Margin    6.0 db    10.5 db

Rik

Can't really comment without knowing the throughput, Baz, she appears to be on ADSL2+.

Baz

how does she tell Rik

Rik

Throughput or ADSL2+? The former by a speed test, the latter by asking her ISP, or telling us who it is.

isp is through utility warehouse

Baz

would a speed test from any one do

I think they are just a reseller though. How do they classify her service, up to 8 or up to 24 Mbps?

Up to 16Mb, but the connection in the 1st post shows close to 19mb?

I think she is on the package one as Glenn says up to 24mb. just waiting for her to get in touch again now and for some BT tests

Rik

BT tests may not work wih an LLU line, Baz.

just found that out Rik. shes online now and trying another test if it helps.if she comes to the forum will she be able to view this thread as a guest if it would be easier to talk that way

Rik

She can view as a guest but not post. OTOH, if she joins, we can talk directly. :)

router stats are
ADSL Link     Downstream     Upstream
Connection Speed    19056 kbps    1020 kbps
Line Attenuation    16.0 db    5.3 db
Noise Margin    6.0 db    10.5

on a netgear 54mgbs wireless adsl2+ modem router dg834g v4

she is connecting wireless

Rik

That's terrible speed for her sync, Baz, and suggests ISP congestion. Try a ThinkBroadband test to confirm the result.

well its taking ages to test. she is trying again..........

It's working fine from here, Baz.

yeah and here too  :dunno:

Rik

They may be port blocking, tell her to try using the port 80 switch.

Baz

got a result now here

it said the ISP was TalkTalk but I dont think thats right.shes trying to find out now. the result in post 15 earlier said it is Opal Telecom

Rik

They are a reseller, Baz, so it's entirely possible. Whatever, that's a rubbish result for the sync speed and if she can change ISP she should.

If you can PM me her IP address, Baz, I can do a lookup for you.

Hey Baz doesn't the banner in your signature tell her?   ;)

Rik

If your daughter's viewing this topic right now, Baz, it comes back as Opal Telecomm.

Rik

Opal is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Carphone Warehouse, so could be on the Talk Talk network.

Sebby

I'm surprised the throughput is so low, even if it is the TalkTalk network. It's actually not that bad...

Rik

It's a rubbish throughput for the sync, though, isn't it, Seb. :(
Rik

Sebby

Yeah, absolutely terrible. I'm just saying that I wouldn't expect such a poor throughput even from the likes of TalkTalk. :(

No, seriously, I know a few people who are on TalkTalk. Whilst their customer service is the pits, the actual network seems to be okay. :)

Don't forget this is in Manchester.

Hiya!

I had to sign up, it was frustrating reading the comments but not being able to reply!

So yeah, hi...thanks for all that, and you're right it, is Manchester, after all! But the connection has been really good up until a couple of weeks ago. There's a notable difference now, can't stream things smoothly anymore etc. Odd....

You're welcome, Baz (and Pea). :)

It sounds like the network has taken on more customers than it can service. Have you noticed if it's better first thing in the morning?

Haha oh charmin i'm just an extra statistic for your forum ey! ;)

I'm not sure if it's better on the mornings, I shall keep tabs of it though. I might see if i can get through to the tech support for utility warehouse, can't imagine them being much help though..

Watership down is traumatising!

Not an extra statistic, Pea, a very special statistic - as far as I know, a unique one. :)

See what speeds you get in the morning. If the results are markedly better, it's well worth kicking up (it is either way, but better results in the morning pretty much confirm network congestion).

I found Bambi traumatising. ;)

Unique? What's he been saying!?

I'm not good at mornings, but i'll see what i can do, cheers. I'll try wired up too, cheers.

It's disney films, they're scarring! I'm not sure if watership down is even disney, actually, but the childhood films are definitely unnerving viewing!

Rik

So were the Brothers Grimm. ;)

Baz hasn't said a word, but afaik, you are the first father/daughter membership we have had. We have one father/son that I know of, but that's it. :)

pea

Hiya!

Right, so it seems miraculously better as of tonight. I have no idea why though, because (not that I understand any of this) the router stats aren't much different to the ones Baz showed ya earlier;

ADSL Link   Downstream   Upstream
Connection Speed   18931 kbps   1020 kbps
Line Attenuation   16.0 db   5.3 db
Noise Margin   6.2 db   10.6 db

I'm confused  :-\ But it seems almost back to normal speed anyway, so I don't s'pose it matters!  :thumb:

Good to hear, Pea.  :thumb:
