Netgear DG834 v4

Hi all. I'm new to IDNET after a nightmare of a year with Sky broadband.

My broadband was activated today, within 3 days...i'm so pleased, and i went through the usual set up with the set up cd for the router but for some reason the Netgear router connected to a router login page and requested a username/password. The U/P on the base of the router doesn't work and i'm a bit confused.

Does anyone know what i should be doing?

Apart from that i'm blown away by the speeds. I'm connected to a village exchange with no hope of LLU anytime so just relying on an approximate 4MB connection but already very impressed with IDNET. For the past 3 months i've been used to waiting an hour for a 60KB JPEG to download so you can imagine the smile on my face right now.

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.

The usual login to a Netgear is username 'admin' and password 'password' no quotes in either case, or have I completely misunderstood you? (Incidentally, you really don't need to run that CD, just login straight to the Netgear from your browser.)

WOW.....the last time i had such a warm welcome was when i joined a historical tour group in Greece but got on the wrong bus and boat and ended up on a nudist's island.

Yeah i tried the default username & password admin:password but it was rejected. I've had no problems since so i guess it was just the router registering itself....i've also had no further pop ups so i'll ignore it, ( i have a hunch i only got that router login page simply because i did use the cd). Anyway i doubt ignoring the whole thing will interfere with my broadband connection so i'll just enjoy the web and these constant speeds....these speeds are a revelation to me.

To everyone that replied a big thanks and a big hello....i'll see you around on the forums because i'm too chatty and too nosey for my own good.

I've just taken delivery of a netgear from IDNet and IDNet had already set it up as User ... admin and the password was as advised on the original welcome letter from about 3 years ago. Must admit it had me foxed for a while.

Yeah mine was preset with the word user but the password section was blank. But i figure i shouldn't worry about it as the router has had a prescence on the web since teatime, is obviously recognised by the network, and is operating just as i'd expect it to.

Still, when your ISP is new, the hardware is new, and you're a bag of nerves installing everything you're terrified of doing something that hasn't been written down in black & white. Ormaybe that's just me?

Bit worried here. If you haven't been to the router pages then it's odds on that you haven't set 'security settings' which will mean that you're wide open to attack I'm afraid. Suggest you ring IDNet 1st thing Monday and have them guide you through. In the meantime, take care on the net.

Oops, not so much wide open to attack as wide open to having your bandwidth filched due to an unsecure router.

Good gawd...i thought the router settings were pre set as a poster above me said he hadn't used the installation CD.

Any help would be gratefully received. Right now i think i'm experiencing a heart-attack.

Are you using the wireless function of the router? If not, all you really need to change (and someone will correct me if I'm wrong here), is the SSID, to something only you recognise, and the admin login password. While you're in the settings, you can also turn off the wireless function, but if you are using it, come back to us, as you'll need to set up some more security.

I'm using the wired Netgear router as i'm not interested in wireless features.

I thought the router was pre-configured, i was told to simply plug the router in and wait a minute.

In that case, I don't think you need to panic, but just change the admin login password, and possibly the SSID, and switch off the wireless function, at your earliest convenience.

I'm not sure, but when IDNet pre-configure the router they change the password for you to the same as your IDNet account password. If you struggle, just give IDNet a ring and they can remotely connect to your router

Thanks everyone. I managed to input the password for the router, something i couldn't do at the install stage because i forgot the password was the same as my IDNET account password.

Couldn't find the page for the wireless function but only me uses the computer...so is it vital i change the setting? And couldn't find the SSID.

Honestly....i have a host of qualifications, speak several languages, pilot a small aircraft and play the spoons BUT a damn Netgear router nearly had me beat.
