Some help please, As I said before I am using a OLD/Knackered on last legs Netgear it has rebooted itself a copule of times this morning allready. I am looking at 2 replacments one is the D-Link DSL-2740b Draft N Wireless Modem Router and the other one is a Netgear RangeMax Wireless ADSL Modem/Router DG834PN.  Any views on which is the better one or works well on a poor line ?

Given you got good results from the Netgear before it died, I'd suggest staying with it. Personally, I wouldn't buy an 'N' class router until the standard is ratified, I suspect you'll get more pain from incompatibilies.

I've used a couple of D-Links, they were OK, but nothing special.

Yes and Netgear are so easy to set up. I had not heard of D link before I was just reading though the Argos Catalogue (the only place round here to get a router) and the specs looked quite good.

Thanks for that. Its a shame that I realy need the router today as mine is just not going to hold on much longer. its giving me a D/S NM of 3db not good. at least the upstream has got better now 10db

Try a re-boot, Bill. Netgear's are notorious for the margin falling off, it seems to be a display issue.

Why buy brand new?

I recently purchased a Speedtouch that arrived within 24hrs and I couldn't tell that it was a return or used.

You buy several from them and find out which is the best for your line.

Back on old router Bl--dy thing wont work. They sent me a NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless Router –Gigabit Edition WNR854T setup seems easy but it will not detect my connection. I have plugged the cable from the master socket in to the router but it is not detecting the signal.

I'm pretty sure that's a cable router, Bill, not ADSL. Check the spec here, it refers to connecting it to a cable/dsl modem.

Did you order by 'net or by phone, Bill? If the latter, did you specify what you wanted the router for? If so, Sale and Supply of Goods Act will apply. IAC, Distance Selling Regulations do apply, so look at the small print on the invoice, you may be able to return. It would be worth a phone call to find out.

Does DSL not mean ADSL and SDSL? From looking at your link, Rik, I would assume it is both cable and ADSL/SDSL.

But from looking at the reviews here and again at Rik's link, it would appear you need a separate modem, there is not one built into the router. I suspect this is your problem Bill.

I used one of these for ages before getting my wireless modem, i would not have changed it had i not needed wireless, its a great price with no bidders auction ends 10-Feb-07 18:50:23 GMT.

Exactly, Lance. We tend to refer to routers when we should be saying ADSL routers. The former are usually pure ethernet, the latter have the ADSL modem built in.

Bill you have been given more advice than you can shake a stick at yet you keep going off and trying other things,i don't get it mate.
I told You the trust router was a good one and you could have had it for less than £20,now you are  asking advice about a £119 wireless router , even if you get it cheap is it going to be less than the  £20 that you probably could have had the Trust one for?
You are back to square one again you don't know if the new router will work but the Trust one would have.
You seem to be hell bent on making things more difficult and  expensive
than they need to be

People here have tried to help you to the best of your ability but, as Max says, you keep ignoring it and going your own way. If you really want to get a better connection, and I'm not trying to be funny when I say this, you need to buy a new house. It doesn't matter whether you use a Mac to connect or a Windows box, it will not change the fundamental characteristics of your line. You could ask IDNet to get a BT engineer out, who might be able to improve the line a bit, but if you have hard-wired extensions, the chances are that any work he did would be chargeable.

A new router may improve things marginally, but that's about as much as you can expect. Given you've had your best results with a Netgear, why not stick with that brand?

As to the Belkin, I personally would not go for a pre-N model. Once the standard is ratified, fine, but until then the chances are you will find incompatibilities between different brands of adaptors, so will end up spending more on changing other hardware.

I have to agree Max, I gave Bill a valid link to a Netgear Modem Router with a free USB Dongle that I am sure would have worked perfectly, however he ordered a different one that wasn't, it seems a Modem Router .  , it seems that you cannot help some folk.

I think  you've got to  accept  it doesn't matter how much money you throw at your problem if your line is not up to the job you are not going to gain much by changing to x,y, or z brand of modem/router.

Sorry everyone. The Belkin has been offered to me for £20.00 as the guy has just joined Vodafone. The price is fine its just not sure how the Belkin compares to a Netgear.  Had a email from Dabs saying that they would not exchange the router. So have listed it on Ebay and with a bit off luck get most of my money back. I would like to thank everyone for all their time and help.
