Thanks to all for the welcome - I am starting to feel I am a member of an exclusive club!

My main concern is that I have always paid by credit card which was OK a few years ago. It's too late to change to direct debit - they will probably end up charging me twice!

Still, I will be positive - who knows I might be one of the lucky ones and 'escape' without them coming back to haunt me in a few months time.

I destroyed a debit card to get rid of pipex/tiscali and got a reissue. I think its not unusual for these cowboys to charge for another month once you've left.

It's why I never give CCAs on cards, Steve, you have no powers to stop them. :(

I 'phoned the credit card company earlier today; if necessary they will block the card and re-issue with another number.
When I explained the (potential) problem he asked if I was with AOL - so they are aware of the issues. Also said they might be
able to help if Pipex do make unauthorised demands.

As I said earlier, it may well go OK.

Do I get an OAP concession rate?

Stop it, or they'll all want one!  ;D

 ;D

What bugs me is the way they make the number so hard to read - these days there are very few cases where a card will go through an imprint machine.

Well, two months with IDNet and I am still impressed.
Typical speeds are up by 1-2 Mbps - more than adequate for my needs and I like the idea that I can keep a constant check on my download usage.

I have to praise BT; cancellation of my spare line went exactly as they said including a nice credit into my bank.

As for Pipex; they too have (so far) been totally on the ball. Could it be something has changed there recently?
Two weeks after terminating my service I am still receiving & sending emails.
This morning I got my final statement - a credit of £14.00.
Even if I never get the promised cheque I have only overpaid by £8.00 and after 12 years with them I will write that off if it comes to it.

Just to be safe I have asked my card company to cancel my card and issue a new one.

With Pipex, it might be worth changing your identity and moving to a different part of the country as well. :P

Do you realise whilst paying by CC it takes two to cancel payments, ie you and (in your case) Pipex. Be aware that although you have requested cancellation, Pipex may not follow suit ::)

In future, always, if possible, pay by Direct Debit that offers you (on your own) the right to cancel payments. If possible, never ever pay ongoing payments by credit card, it is very, very dangerous when dealing with 'iffy' companies of which Pipex is one. ;)

Rik

Good advice, Q, I will never give a CCA on a card, before IDNet moved to direct debit I used to pay by standing order.

Quandam: As far as I can recall credit card was the preferred if not the only way to pay Pipex all those many years ago; also Pipex were a 'trustworthy' company then. Having said that, all my/our other regular payments are by direct debit and have been for a number of years.

Sebby: I like your suggestion but I bet Pipex/Tiscali/TalkTalk would track me down.

And if they don't, the 'Netters will, David.

Hi all

Just to finish (I hope) this saga; Pipex sent me a cheque as promised to cover overpayment within three weeks of final bill.
So far, two months on, I've heard nothing further. The odd thing is, nearly three months since cancellation I can still send and
receive emails - I can't check if I still have an internet connection as I cancelled the telephone line at the same time.

Either I am very lucky or perhaps Pipex have indeed improved their systems.

Regarding IDNet; still very happy with decision to pay a little extra and avoid the 'big names'.

If you truly believe you need to pick a mobile phone that 'says something' about your personality, don't bother. You don't have a personality. A mental illness, maybe - but not a personality
