Hi Bill

Your stats are a lot better than mine. :(

The router should default to 1500. Leave that as it is, 'wide open', and make any changes to MTU/RWIN solely from within Windows.

Or even better, don't make any changes.

Have just talked to Belkin C/S . Have been told the MTU cannot go higher than 1492 and you need special software to change it.

My linksys doesn't go higher than 1492 either, but as i can't get windows to go any higher than 1460 (no matter what i try) it doesn't matter!

You know how I love to tweak! :)

It's OK for you to tweak Rik...you know what you are doing... :banana2:

Belkin CS are not the most informed, Bill, but they may well be right. I can't see why they would have chosen that figure though, 1472 I could understand.

OK, to see what your optimum MTU is, try pinging a site you deem important. Use the - l and - f switches. Start with ping <url or IP address> - l 1472 -f. Note that's a lowercase L, not a 1, and you need a space between it and the number. If the system reports back that the packet was fragmented, try again but replace 1472 with 1458. If that is OK, try with 1465, if that fragments, reduce by 1, try again etc until fragmentation stops. (If it doesn't fragment, increase instead...) That is your ideal MTU. Chose an RWIN value to suit.

What have you tried to set it with? Sounds daft, but did you have the correct network interface selected at the time (I've often missed that!).

I didn't always, though, I learnt how by asking others for help.  :)

I've tried DrTCP and one other one I can't remember the name of (but got from this forum somewhere). I made sure that each time I had the right NIC selected.

I'm not bothered too much because my connection works, but it would be nice for windows to work!

Was it TCP Optimizer? That's the one I prefer, it even does pings and checks maximum MTU automatically.

If Windows isn't taking the changes, it's a registry issue. Your are logged in as an administrator I take it?

yes on both counts. I only played a little at the time, maybe i'll try again tonight! My guess is that the registry isn't saving correctly.

Try using the 'modify all' option on the first tab.

Well I am stumped . I can change it on my Pc but there do not seem to be any setings on the Belkin to change. I tried Belkin tech who did not have a clue.

Rik

It may be they just haven't provided a means of changing it, Bill. I personally wouldn't touch a Belkin, so I've no experience. You could ask over in the DSL Hardware section of ThinkBroadband, someone there will probably have one if you state the model number. Alternatively, try Googling the model number, you may get a hit on the subject.

That said, at 1492 rather than 1500, the router MTU isn't going to have a big limiting effect.

I read somewhere that if you've got router problems, several precise belts with a lump hammer often do the trick.  Whether on the router or the owner it didn't say.

Rik

I've cured many things that way - once they stop working at all I just replace them and the problem has gone! :)

Bill, just leave the bloody router alone, it is working, producing acceptable results, why try to destroy it?

I plugged my router in, put my ID and PW in, and that is it for me, it works..sorted.

I have not touched it. Its working just wondered if it could be done. The best bit is if there is a problem it tells you weather its your side or the network.

Rik

What I want is a router that tells me what is wrong, where it's wrong and when it's going to be fixed. :)

Sorted. The popup blocker was stopping a subpanel. Have now set it to 1492.  :)

Rik

Are you using Firefox, Bill? I've found that routers seem to expect IE, and sometimes throw an oddity with other browsers.

I am using IE 7 but did not relise I had a popup blocker active on the Google toolbar.

Rik

Of course, you may also have the IE popup blocker active if you let MS have it's wicked way with you when you installed IE7! :)
