unfortunately the time has come to leave IDNET...not because I'm unhappy with the service far from it, it's great...but since moving house last year my speed in my new house is 0.5mb download speed and it seems pointless paying £24 for something that i rarely use to download anything anymore because it's sooooo slow.

It seems such a shame that i am more than happy with IDNET's service and reliability but because BT antiquated telephone infrastructure i can get these appallingly low speeds and both me and IDNET will lose out.

so with a fond farewell IDNETTER's it was fun while the speeds were good...but alas i must go...maybe in 30 years time when I've either got cable or a decent phone line I'll see you all again!!!

Matt

Rik

Sorry to see you go, Matt, but I can understand why. Are there any LLU operators at your exchange?

I've signed up with sky for B/band, TV and phone (Line rental + All 01, 02 calls) £32.50...

I've checked on samknows and it looks as though sky is LLU enabled

Rik

It does, in which case there's a chance you can get a higher speed as it will be ADSL2+. :)

when i completed the set-up process with sky they said i could get only speeds of 256kb!!! but for the sake of half a meg i'll be saving over £25 a month in Line rental/calls and broadband.

Steve

Shame! Mobile broadband?

I have considered mobile broadband...but after a little research it doesn't look as though i could much more that what i've already got. Maybe IDNET could do a managment buy-out of BT and sort there shoddy service out!!!

Rik

Now that would be good.

Sorry to see you go. Is it 0.5Mb because of the distance from the exchange?

mattpearce79

Yes Sebby...3.26km

Connection Speed     736 kbps     448 kbps
Line Attenuation    63.5 db    31.5 db
Noise Margin    5.1 db    16.0 db

:'(

Sorry to see you go, Matt.  Best of luck with your new ISP.  :)

The actual length of the line to the exchange must be longer, Matt, as a 3.26km line equates to around 45dB attenuation. The length of the cabling is more likely to be around 4.5km. Even so, you should be sync'ing at 2-3 times your current rate. The noise margin is fine, so it doesn't suggest instability. Have you got an NTE5 master socket? If so, have you tried the test socket? If not, have you considered removal of the ring wire. I reckon we can get that sync up!

mattpearce79

i have plugged it into the test socket it went up briefly to 836kb and then went back down to 736kbs...i'll check the wiring tonight...

mattpearce79

The socket was only installed 5 months ago...does the engineer automatically attach the ring-wire even tough they aren't really relevant anymore???
Also removing the ring wire...if it does have any effect will i see an immediate change or is it something that will creep up over a period of time?

Rik

Engineers tend to connect the ring wire, but it's not needed by most modern phones and the ring current is, in any case, provided by the filter. The effect will be immediate if there is one, either the noise margin will increase (if you remain connected throughout) or the sync speed will increase when you reconnect, Matt.

Problem is, the ring wire makes no difference when using the test socket, so if the test socket didn't yield much of an improvement, there's nothing that can be done. :(

Rik

Good point, Seb. That wiring is certainly taking the scenic route. :(

It is. It looks like there's some noise pickup along the way to the property (or some other problem) given that the sync is so low even for a 63dB line.

Rik

Especially as the margin still appears to be at 6db.

Hi Matt,

First off sorry to hear your leaving!

Second, be careful with joining Sky as I left Sky to join IDNET.  Unfortunately all I could get with Sky with the Connect package which in my opinion was terrible, lows speeds, capped line and not very good customer service.  You also only have 8 days cooling off period which really doesn't give your line much chance to settle so if you have any doubts then get out.

Wish you all the best. :fingers:

Sebby

Yep, Sky Connect is seriously poor, just like O2 Access. If you can't get their LLU service, don't bother!

mattpearce79

with the state of my line i really have nothing to lose...i don't really download anything at home anymore...just browse the internet..any downloading can be done at work!

Sky Connect is dire after 5pm and should be avoided like the plague. However, if the OP simply needs emails and general web activity it is suffice. During the day download speeds are great and would compete with anyone. :thumb:
