As i said yesterday I am very happy with my Belkin router, however it keeps on lighting up the line fault message. At first I thought it was the Belkin cable and changed that but I am still getting the orange line fault message. My speeds were dreadful last night below 1 meg. The only thing left for me to try is to change the filter plate back to a filter socket could this make a diffrence, or would it seem to be a fault on the router ? Its not on all the time but just lights up for what seems to me to be no reason.

Rik

Let's put it this way, Bill. Is the router performing better or worse than your Netgear? If worse, particularly in this respect, then it's probably the router. If both are the same, then it's probably your line or wiring.

A filtered socket should make no difference unless you are filtering at the master socket and, thus, taking your internal wiring out of the equation.

BT out tomorrow fault on the line again.  >:( I spoke to Idnet C/S who said that there was a lot of noise on the line when i spoke to them.

Rik

Would it be at all practical for you to move, Bill. I'm not being funny when I ask the question, but obviously, your connection is important to you (I'm sure we all feel just the same). However, it appears that, where you are, you will be fighting a constant battle to keep things going, a sort of Forth Bridge of the ADSL world. I know I have ADSL on my checklist of things to find out before we move next.

I bet BT will just put a few tests on your line, shrug their shoulders, walk off, and then add their invoice to you're phone bill.

As Rik has said Bill, apart from moving, I reckon you are just going round in circles with a hopeless case phone line.

I hope I am proven wrong.

Bill

My thinking, as you will realise, is the same as Inactive's. Unless you can persuade BT to run fresh backhaul for you, this is just going to be a constant battle. That said, therefore, would you be happier on a fixed-rate line. It might just be worth discussing the option with CS to see what they think?

Can't you get cable Bill?

RJM

Do any of your neighbours have the same problems Bill?

Maybe worth asking a few of them.

or perhaps running an extension from their master socket

RJM

If they have got "wireless", maybe a deal could be done.

If they are not on ADSL, and their line is good quality, could you get agreement to put in a wireless router, Bill - would the distance be practical?

Snap, Robin :)

well Active, as long as your fee is less than the broadband package, he may buy your silence!!

Indeed, that  was where I was aiming..

Alas I am the only one with BB round here. Now I know why :D the lines c---. Cable has not made its way out to us and the chances are it never will. I dont mind a drop in speed but when mine drops it goes big time from 4.3 down to less than a meg. A fixed rate line is a option but not keen on that unless all else fails.

Rik

It depends how upset you're getting with the performance, Bill. It may be that it would cause you less stress to move to a fixed speed line, but only you can really make that call. The probability of BT sorting your line out with any degree of longevity is probably very slim. :(

Afterthought: Have you had a fixed line? What sort of performance did you get with it?

I was on a fixed rate line for about 2 years. I allways managed about 1.8 meg download but it was stable. MY MSR is 2 meg so anything over that is a bonus. I did think about satellite BB but it was not cheap.

Rik

If your MSR is 2000kbps, your FTR is 1400kbps, against which a fixed-rate 2Mbps line looks quite attractive if it's stable... Just my 2p worth, Bill.

Bill i think i would go back to the fixed line ,life's too short to spend it chasing something you probably will never get.

The strange workings of BT. Having talked with C/S i faulted my line for a noise problem. BT said no fault could be found and they would come out tomorrow. A few hours later the line fault light on the router has gone out and speeds back to normal. Strange that they could not find a fault on my line  Now that it seems to be sorted (PLEASE) I can recomend the Belkin router as a nice steady connection. The only thing I cannot work out is how long i have been connected and what my line errors are. Ah well you cant have everything.

Rik

Pop over to ThinkBroadband, Bill, and post in the DSL Hardware section, quoting the model number. Someone will tell you how to get the figures.
