Having being with ZEN for over 2 months with excellent service, since leaving O2, I had a BT fault occur which resulted in zero throughput on an 8128 connection to the exchange which has given me nightmares. As an ex computer shop owner and system builder, I had already carried out all conceivable checks before even contacting ZEN (seeing as their support side was closed over the Bank Holiday weekend anyway). When I did contact them on the Tuesday following they made me do all the usual checks, in  fact several times, each time I spoke to someone different. They even made me purchase a new router (the only thing I could not test as I had no spare) which they said had a 60% failure rate when they pinged it. I reluctantly purchased one with the same result. They eventually said that they wanted to arrange a BT home visit, despite telling me previously that BT do not check thoughput, with a possible charge of £144 +Vat, which I refused as I had heard of many horror stories of lies from Openreach engineers saying no fault found especially when I have an excellent connection to my exchange (less that 1/2 mile away). My only option was to ask for my MAC as I thought then that BT has to go to the exchange for the changeover and the fault should be found. I decided to go back to O2 as it appeared their low peak time speeds and high latency problems had been cured for the majority of their ACCESS (non LLU) users. In the meantime while waiting for my O2 activation, I had an email from ZEN saying that BT had fixed the problem but it was too late as the migration had already gone too far to cancel. Yesterday was my first day back with O2 and my speed at 3pm was 6.89mb great I thought, but by peak time at 6pm it had dropped to 2.64mb and by 9:44pm it was down to 0.46 and the latency had trebled from 41 to 130. So it appears that their problems are still ongoing, so today I phoned O2 and asked for my MAC and to cancel my contract on their free 30day get out clause.

So while waiting for my MAC (3 days according to O2), the problem is where to go now. I have researched very carefully on the many forums and I have decided either to either to go back to ZEN or my better instincts tell me to try IDnet as it has similar benefits with the addition of 5mb extra cap and free telephone support as well as the telephone service which I may take on as well. So I am asking, am I making the right decision, I know that many will be biased but I just want an honest opinion.

Thanks

Colin

:welc: Colin, :karma:

Sorry to here of your problems. Fortunately here, as we are all customers, I don't think you'll get any biased answers. We tend to tell things as they are and for me personally recently thats been great. No major problems with the service for a while now since IDNet/BT sorted out the connection to the new central.

Again, sorry to here about you having to speak to different people each time with Zen, and them making you buy a router just for testing. My experience of IDNet and seeing other reports here is that you can just ask for the person dealing with your case (by first name!) and if needed, they have a router they loan out for fault elimination purposes to save you buying one. IDNet have a good relationship with BT and are able to escalate issues well to get them resolved.

At present there are no issues of throughput, and there doesn't seem to be any major latency issues either.

Hope this helps!

Hi, Colin, and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

We're biased of course, but if you've looked around the forum you'll know we're a pretty happy bunch in the main. Things do go wrong occasionally, of course, but when they do we know that we can talk to the MD of IDNet to find out what's happening if needed, and he and the support staff do keep an eye on the forum.

There is no contention within the IDNet network, so the only potential chokepoint would be BT congestion at your exchange. My line runs flat out at all times of day, though. If you're on a WBC-enabled exchange, you'll shortly be able to migrate to ADSL2+, with the potential speed benefits which, in your case would be significant.

I'm on the phone package and can't fault it. Cheaper for me than BT, it just works. As with ADSL (and I've been here 30 months now), I just haven't needed to contact IDNet with a problem.

If you do phone, you'll talk to a small team who communicate together well. No call centres, no scripts and a willingness to treat you as an intelligent adult. :)

I think you'd like it here.

Hi and Welcome

Check out Thinkbroadband and ISPReview and they will confirm what we claim.

No other ISP offers better technical support, you speak to an individual whose name you will soon recognise and whom you can speak to again later if you wish.

Earlier this week I posted a problem on this board out of Support office hours, yet within 30 minutes a technician had emailed me from his home, a senior member of Idnet staff telephoned me as their office opened next morning.

The Admin staff on Idnetters have direct access to the people running Idnet and use that facility when necessary.

Everyone here could get cheaper Broadband, but we know we cannot get a better ISP and some of us have been here over 3 years even though we can leave on just 30 days notice.

Try Idnet and you will be impressed.

Thanks for everyones replies and I have made up my mind to join IDnet as soon as my MAC arrives from O2, the only problem I am expecting is that when I phoned O2 for my MAC and the cancellation of contract, he stated that he would put it down for immediate disconnection, although he then later said that when I receive and use my MAC I would have to phone them back within 2 days to let them know that I have used it so that they could cancel the service and stop billing me. So I do not know quite how to take that. I am just worried that my broadband will cease before I receive my MAC, then resulting in a delay and a connection charge with IDnet. O2 are probably doing it out of spite.

Colin

Rik

It may be that under their 30 day clause, they cancel the contract rather than issue a MAC. Have you checked the small print?

Welcome  :karma:

I came here from Be which I believe uses the same infrastructure as O2. Your experiences mirror mine, decent throughput and latency during off peak but a totally unusable connection at peak. Having jumped from the frying pan (Pipex) into the fire (Be) I was in the position of having to pay for two contracts while looking for a third. Because of that I spent a lot of time researching and both IDNet and Zen were at the top of my list.

The reason I went for IDNet was from reading through these forums I could see that when problems occurred there was a genuine desire by the forums users and IDNet staff to resolve them.

My advice would be give IDNet a try, if it all goes wrong you are only on a month's contract. Zen are undoubtedly one of the best ISPs around but I feel from reading through thinkbroadband's forum that IDNet are better, particularly as far as support is concerned. The pricing structure is similar so I'd suggest you have little to lose by giving IDNet a go :)

I never received the MAC as promised from O2, (in fact it was not even showing that it was asked for on their system), so I had to phone up for it but got it eventually within 2 hours and gave it straight away to IDNet. I will be migrated to IDNet on the 21st, which is excellent news, the 3day migration as advertised. I can't wait.

Hello there I am having very similar problems. My closest exchange is a BT only exchange (Hoo) Would joining Idnet solve my high latency problem? the problem will surely remain as the equipment is still all BT equipment?

I am currently with 02 and although the speeds are better than expected the latency makes online gaming impossible.

Glenn

Hi Phantom :welc: :karma:

IDNet normally have low ping times on their network. Users that have come across from O2's non LLU service have seen big improvments on their connection, with constant connection speeds and latency.

and potentially a stupid question do Idnet provide a router etc? Anyone have past experience returning their o2 router? what is the process?

It's O2's non-LLU service that tends to have high pings (called O2 Access, I believe).

Oh, and welcome to the forum, Phantom! :karma:

IDNet do not provide a free router, hence the 1 month contract, but you can buy a router off of them (a Netgear DG834G). When you got your O2 router, you should have got a freepost return label. :)

Rik

Hi Phantom and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma: IDNet's generally lower ping times come from the way their own network is set up, rather than BT. They guarantee no contention within the network, so will deliver whatever your line and exchange can sustain. If you went onto the SuperMax package, or WBC equivalent, you'd also get higher priority at the exchange, which took a further 4-5ms of pings for me.
Rik
--------------------

This post reflects my own views, opinions and experience, not those of IDNet.

Phantom

Thanks for all the replies I shall have to look for the return label! The contention rate should be good but for some reason the network just dies around peak time. The exchange serves only a small number of households compared to my previous exchange (where I had no problem).

I would be looking at the home max package as the supermax is a little out of my price range.

Rik

My advice would be to try it and see, at worst, you're committed for one month. Most people find that they get better results with IDNet, and there was a post over on ThinkBroadband recently from someone who came to IDNet and got a significant improvement in performance when support were able to get his connection moved from a congested VP to an uncongested one. Previous ISPs hadn't spotted the issue.

Yes I am

Which is why im a little hesitant that there will be any improvment with anybody as they will all be using the same BT equipment there are no LLU ISPs present. I have not actually raised the issue with 02 as I dont believe there is anything they can do. The problem i assume is a lack of capacity.

Phantom

Thanks for the replies so far, I am not as stupid as my questions would suggest! :)

There's no such thing as a stupid question in my books. :)

gyruss

The only 'stupid' is not asking a question in the first place.

Anyway, as late as i am, i can concur in the positive experience of being with IDNET, they have their technical issues just like any other isp, but my experiences thusfar has been very favourable from the initial connection to the overall level of service received as a customer.

Naturally, experience of speed and connections will differ from area to area in the UK as some areas cannot obviously achieve the highest speeds, but with various upgrades going on to improve this, its a constantly changing scenario anyway.

When i bought in Sky+ recently, their sales team pestered me like crazy to take on their broadband package aswell, but I was fortunate to be in the same office as a chap who's already on their broadband and i witnessed first hand his frustrating calls to their tech support due trying to find out why his speed was so bad.  Of course I didn't take them up on their offer :)

IDNET has been probably my favourite ISP thusfar, I play the MMO 'World of Warcraft' (at the moment), and I see whole hosts of guild members dropping offline periodically that are on the same isp, and while they all drop, i continue playing on.  That kinda tells you your with the better ISP :)

I would think that IDNet will be significantly better, though it could be general exchange congestion.

Phantom

This website seems to suggest no issue with congestion

Rik

The only problem with that report is the sentence "There may still be an exchange problem, however BT are not currently reporting that they are aware of it." Often, BT don't keep the public data current, presumably to make life easier for themselves. :(

As I say, I would think the problem is actually O2's non-LLU service being over-subscribed (they problem don't invest a lot in it as their main business is LLU).

I came from O2 recently and when you cancel they send you a large jiffy bag (very quickly), with a Freepost returns label and you have to return the router within 30days of contract end or they will charge you for it. Also make sure you get a 'Proof of Posting' from the PO, just in case it gets lost, because they will ask for it.

Dangerjunkie

Hi,

If you join IDNet on Home Supermax or one of the business tariffs (any plan that promises "traffic priority" at the exchange) then you won't be on the same equipment. These accounts are registered with BT Wholesale as business accounts so you get on the lower-contended business ADSL muxes and links from the exchange. Even if you picked a lower tariff and ended up on the same mux the main path your data takes to/from the exchange will change so I would consider it worth a try.

In Q3 off this year your exchange will be converted 21CN which will mean you can change to ADSL 2+ if you like. This is a totally different system and you will definitely be on different gear whatever tariff you chose.

Cheers,
Paul.

I had incredibly low speeds after moving and having to go on the O2 access package, for myself changing back to IDnet has been great and no more capacity issues, my exchange has no issues with congestion and O2 did try and point the finger there, but it was their lack of capacity that caused the problems for me

Another first poster here, my o2 Access contract finishes on June 13th <big sigh of relief>, after asking for suggestions on DSL Zone pros and cons etc I have been pointed in the direction of IDNet, also read your forum on TBB.

Pasted is the sort of issue I have been experiencing for the past few months and I am looking for an ISP which will allow me to do silly things such as use my PC for on-line shopping, facebook etc in the evenings when himself is watching the footie through the inside of his eyelids ;D

O2 have asked me to run the btspeedtester on a very regular basis and it would appear to me that most of the time they give me a decent throughput, its something going wrong with the o2 end

You need a further 32k to move back up to 4M, Mist, frustrating, isn't it. :( As I would expect, you're doing better than me by about 500k, most of which is down to my 9db target margin. Your line would appear to be 'quieter' than mine, so able to run at 6db. You might benefit from a 2-Wire 2700 router which, for most of us on long lines has improved stability and sync speed, it's worth about 500k on my line.

I'd expect you to see fairly stable throughput of 3200k with IDNet on your current profile.

Netgears are notorious for misreporting the NM, Mist. Mine used to go down to -2db before resyncing, technically impossible. :)

It was me who pointed you in the direction of IDNet via DSL Zone (under a different username) Glad you have found your way here. Once you have got your MAC point it in this direction, you will not regret it for one moment.

Listen to what Rik and the guys say as it is well worth taking note of, they are a great help in almost everything. Welcome to IDnetters :thumb:

Thank you very much indeed, I am truly grateful.

I have already tried to read on here about the router suggested but <very very sad> the info. is way above my head, as I said totally non-techy, I really do need 'plug and go'  ;D, but I am looking forward to browsing all the info.and learning as much as I can on here.

Lance

Welcome to the forum, Mist! I certainly believe your throughput problems are down to the o2 network so as Rik says, the move here should do you good.

Hi Mist

Don't be afraid to ask questions, we'll take you through things at your pace. We're all travelling the same road, picking up information, learning about the technology. We may be at different places on that road, but we'll help you catch up. ;)

Thank you all so very very much, I think that I shall enjoy not only the IDNet isp but also the friendliness on this forum and the  warm helpful attitude from all that I have already experienced.

I shall over time buckle down to learning from all your invaluable knowledge.

Thanks again all.

Rik

It's not compulsory, Mist. ;) Of all the ISPs I have used, IDNet are easily the best, and I am sure you'll be as happy as the rest of us.

Lance,

Many thanks for the thought (£10.00 introduction fee) but I certainly had not got this in mind when pointing mist to IDNet. I was simply pleased to help someone who really was not sure of which way to go re a new ISP and was desperate for some common sense advice.

It would appear that IDNet could well have gained a new customer and a 'nice' one at that :thumb:

We hope so, Q. :)

I gave IDnet my MAC this morning and mentioned Q had referred me.
and joy of joys notice my synch. now Rik <grin> on my o2 connection but BTw have told Idnet on the autochecker my line will only go 'up to 3 megs'

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
   Your DSL connection rate: 4544 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 3500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3238 kbps

Rik

BT's database has always been poor, Mist. It says I can get 2M on my line, but I have a 4M sync and a 3.5M profile. :)

Welcome to the happy place, do you have a date yet?

Once IDNet give you your login details, you can set up your email, web space, blog and photo album from your accounts page. The email will work immediately if you want to start moving over, though you would need to use your current ISP's SMTP server till you move, or authenticated SMTP with the IDNet server.

Yes they say Monday 8th June and I have a gw6 thingy on my log in...have already found how to change my password on that portal thank goodness, will try to set up an email addy later but need to access via webmail for ease.

Rik

Remember that the password you have been given is the one you need in your router, Mist. The change for the portal only affects that.

Many thanks for mentioning me to IDNet for referring you. I honestly had not thought of the £10.00 when I posted on DSL Zone but it would be a nice surprise if it did come to fruition. You have definitely made the right move and I am sure you will not regret it :welc:

Phantom

Sorry to bump this thread again, but I joined Idnet a little while ago and as I suspected the latency was an o2 issue. The ping doesn't reach the lows that o2 did but during peak I have no spikes and can happily play my online games. Just need to see how the speed settles, total noob on the sync speeds/profile.

Thanks for the replies.

Lance

Glad to hear that all is going well, Phantom :)

Colin
Hello Colin. I was with o2 before I joined Idnet and I was transferred over no problem, but then again they did try it on with charges
for asking for a mac code, but it was within the 30 days so I got away with it.

I had no problem with any charges as I cancelled the day after activation, but they kept sending me texts and emails about me cancelling the D/D, despite me telling them by phone, text and registered 1st Class letter. They only gave up asking after I emailed them to stop pestering me that as I had not paid anything so there was nothing to refund and by threatening to transfer both our O2 mobiles to another carrier.
