quick question here. when you have downloaded a zip file and you've unzipped it do you keep the original zipped file or not.

I have kept a few just in case but it crossed my mined yesterday if I would be better off keeping them

Rik

You're asking the wrong person, Baz, as I back up everything multiple times. ;) So, yes I do keep the original ZIP files.

I suppose for me it is dependent on what it is I've downloaded. If it is something small and I know where I got it from I don't. Of course, I'm got complete disk images of my machines so if anything did go wrong and it wasn't available, I would just pull it off the backup :)

but do you actually need the original zip file if you already have it unzipped and installed

Rik

Only if you ever need to re-install it, Baz.

hmmm  getting confuddled now  ;D  when you unzip it dont you get the installation file in that

Lance

Yep, so you only need to keep the zip file or the installation file. If I'm going to keep one or other, I tend to keep the zip.

You do not need to keep the original zip file. The unzipped version could always be zipped again.

What I do depends on whether the zip holds an application or data file.

If it's an application I'll unzip it and install it. The unzipped files then get deleted as they serve no purpose and the original zip file will then get archived in case I ever need to reinstall the application.

If it's a data file I'll usually just unzip it and deleted the zip but send a copy of the unzipped file to an archive. Data files tend to be small and I like to have quick and easy access should I need to search for them.

Sorry, I've probably just confused the issue, I'll go back in my closet now  ;D
