Hello people of IDNET!

I have submitted my upgrade order to IDNET for ADSL2+ and the big day is 3rd June.

I use a Netgear DG834G V4 with firmware version 5.01.09 and I'm wondering if this will be OK? I do have the latest firmware (5.01.14) but when I updated to this version I had a weird problem with xbox live which went away when I went back to 5.01.09.

So I don't really want to have to use the latest version if I can help it.

Can any of you good people confirm if 5.01.09 has been tested and is OK with ADSL2+?

I'm kind of presuming it is as I spoke to a very helpful lady at IDNET today who said that version 5.01.01 had been tested and was OK, but when I got home I realise I had my versions wrong and I'm actually on 5.01.09!

Thanks in advance.

Netgears are reported to work fine. I can't say about specific firmwares, but you should be fine. I'd see how you go, and if you need to upgrade, upgrade (and perhaps we can help you fix the Xbox issue - maybe it just needed a factory reset after the update?). :)

Lance

Hi Jonathan!

I don't know about your specific firmware, but from what I've read the Netgears have so far had the best chance of working. I think the advance tends to be update the firmware to the newest version, but seeing that the difference between yours and what you've had confirmed working is so small, I'd just leave it and give it a try!

Thanks guys.

I think I'll try the 5.01.14 again, just in case (and because I like to mess around with things!!)

If it needs a factory reset I guess I can do that from the router page and then restore all my settings? (I'm a good boy and back them up)

Jonathan

I'm never keen on restoring settings, I think it's better to re-do them.

PuncH

tried the newest firmware and the weird problem is still there.

5.01.09 connects to xbox live fine. load up fifa 09 and connects to EA servers fine. can then find and play game online.

5.01.14 connects to xbox live fine. load up fifa 09 and cannot connect to EA servers.

so i drop back to 5.01.09 and all is fine again.

think i'll write down all my settings in case i need to re-do them one day (basically if i'm forced to go to 5.01.14)

PuncH

thanks for that!

it seems that 5.01.14 is a no no for PS3 network AND xbox live!

I wonder whether to go for a custom firmware or just leave it at 5.01.09 and hope that it works ok with ADSL2+ next week.

I'm tempted to leave it to be honest, as 5.01.09 has been flawless for the last few months.

Sebby

Tbh, the changelog for 5.01.14 has no mention of the ADSL driver, so I wouldn't have thought there'd be different ADSL2+ performance anyway.

I'm using a Netgear DG834G V4.01.37 and tried to update it to V5.01.14 but after a few moments it failed and said to contact my administrator ! (I did try to do it as an administrator)

I believe there are other ways to do it but it means digging the original installation CD out so I'm going to try it with the current version and I expect it will work okay.

Sebby

How were you doing the upgrade, John? Also, was it definitely the firmware for your version of the DG834G?

john

I checked that the firmware was specifically for my router, downloaded it and then logged on to my router settings in my browser. Selected 'Router Upgrade' and browsed to locate the downloaded upgrade file then clicked 'Upload'. Got an eggtimer symbol and then got the message "Cannot upload, please contact administrator".

The router works okay with the current revision and I've no doubt it will be okay with ADSL2+, if it is I'm happy to keep the existing revision unless there is a definite benefit in upgrading.

PuncH

what version of the firmware are you now using john?

Strange, I can't think why that wouldn't have worked. What was the exact error?

"Cannot upload, please contact administrator".

Maybe I should try downloading the update again, perhaps it got corrupted.

Sebby

Did you definitely download the UK version of the firmware? I know there is one for North America and Germany and that'll probably give you that error.

PuncH

just a quick thought...

i have UPnP enabled on my router...and I use port forwarding for xbox live.

Could that be the problem with the 5.01.14 firmware as that apparently fixes a lot of UPnP issue.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that have UPnP enable AND using port forwarding is a bit of a no no.

Sebby

You shouldn't need ports forwarded manually if the Xbox support UPnP.

PuncH

hmmm...i had to forward certain ports so i had an open nat when using the xbox. this is the best setting.

i'm wondering whether to try 5.01.14 again and disable the port forwarding and see if the UPnP works properly!

PuncH

when i saw port forwarding...i mean setting up firewall rules to let traffic through to the xbox.

whether that's port fowarding or not i don't know, but it's worked flawlessly ever since i've had my netgear (over a year).

Sebby

Yep, that's the same thing. A quick Google reveals that the Xbox supports UPnP so you shouldn't need a rule setup on the Netgear.

No I definetely chose the "Version 5.01.14 for users outside North America and Germany only" the other option is "Version 5.03.14 for North America users only"

The netgear website is : http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4396

I just tried downloading and installing it again but got the same error.
