I think the first thing to look at is getting your sync speed up. For a 35db line, I'd expect you to achieve full, or near to full, speed sync. Are you running the router from an extension?

For a few weeks now I have disconnected the faceplate and so am currently plugged directly into the TEST socket.  With a filter of course.  I understand this means that I have taken my internal wiring (ring wire etc) out of the equation....

Recently replaced my Netgear with a D-link router, and both routers were reporting appx 35dB.  I will see what happens over the next week or so, and then start a new thread on this subject if the speed seems the same.  The best speed I have seen during the day in the past few weeks is about 5.3 Mb/s - currently getting

Which is about 10times BETTER than I was getting with Pipex same time last night.  But if there is more to be had, then bring it on

Unless you're a gamer, interleaving isn't a big issue until you can sync at full speed. Is that noise margin immediately after a re-sync, or some time later? If later, it could indicate that your target NM has been increased to 9db to improve stability (the same has happened to me this week - after the increase, my error count dropped from 500,000/day to just 15,000/day).

If you're plugged into the test socket, you're correct that internal wiring is out of the equation. It's strange that you're not getting full sync - it suggests a noisy line for some reason. See how you go and let us know if you need any help. :)

I seem to have less errors now that interleaving is turned off.....
