Sending email via mobile broadband

Evening All,

I have got myself set up with the 3 dongle and having a play. All is well, except I can't send emails. Can receive them OK, but when I try to send, I get an error saying that the SMTP server is not accepting connections. Presumably this is due to me not connecting via my home broadband. Anyone know if I can get round this? I can send emails from my work broadband connection...

Hi Al, you need to enable authentication on the outgoing server. It works this way to stop spammers using ISPs' mailservers. If you're not sure how to do this, let us know which mail client you use.

Aha - I use thunderbird.. Why does it work from my work network, though?

It shouldn't.

Have you looked at the settings at work, it may be that you're using their SMTP server?

To set up Outlook 2003 (2007 should be similar) choose:

Tools > Email accounts > View or change > choose the account you want to use then,

More settings > Outgoing Server > Check the 'My outgoing (SMTP) server requires authentication' and 'Use the same settings as my incoming mail server', then

Advanced > Use 587 as the SMTP post and ensure that the 'This server requires an encrypted connection' box is not checked.

Job done.

Nope, definitely using the IDNET SMTP server, its exactly the same Thunderbird configuration as I use at home. It downloads all my IDNet mail and can also send from my IDNet address. Wierd. Assume I will find similar settings to the above in Thunderbird - I haven't got the laptop with me at the moment, but will try later on..

Can do. Haven't got the laptop in the office at the moment, its in the car. Will bring it in after lunch. Weather permitting I'll be out exercising the 3 dongle. Oo-er missus..

Is it possible to use the IDNet SMTP server from a three dongle for sending emails from a none IDNet email address?

Yes, you can use the IDNet SMTP server as the outgoing server for any email address.

I have checked my thunderbird settings and I have ticked the 'Use name and password' box in the settings for the outgoing SMTP server under account settings. Have entered the appropriate username. This setup allows me (rightly or wrongly) to send emails via the IDNet SMTP server from work. The same settings don't work when on mobile broadband, though..

Didn't see that bit in the message above! Have now changed port to 587 and I can send email via mobile broadband and from work. Is it goign to do any harm if I leave this setting as is even when I am at home? Don't really want to have to keep changing the port..
