2 re-syncs in quick succession and then the noise margin settles right down.

I guess the BT pixies could have been at work in my exchange?

(Sorry about all my recent posts...I'm a) a worrier and b) eager to learn!)

edit...just had a 3rd re-sync. I'm assuming I'm reading the graph right and they are re-syncs!?

I know absolutely nothing about this, but looking at that screenshot, they look more like noise spikes to me, Jonathan.

Probably the best advice, in a lightning storm, is to power down and disconnect your router from the electricity and phone line, and go and do something else.  You stand less chance of something bad happening that way.

Hello PuncH

I'm assuming you're in Ipswich due to your name and northstander icon.

My download speed has halved since the massive lightning storm and rain last night.  It was about 3400 kbps and is now 1632 kbps.  I'm assuming this is due to the storm although I'm due for an ADSL2 upgrade (BT should have done it 2 weeks ago but have delayed it twice).  Up-stream rate hasn't changed so I assume BT still haven't done this.  I unplugged the router when I got in from work but the storm was already overhead by then  :(.

Your DSL connection rate: 1632 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1268 kbps

The ones with the pink trace are re-syncs, Jonathan, so you had two just after 11. The earlier 0 points were brief and didn't apparently, cause a re-sync. As Simon says, though, if there's thunder around, it's best to disconnect the router, first from the mains and then from the phone socket.

Several people at work say they lost internet connection completely during and after the storm, so I guess something important got hit in the Ipswich area.

I used to work at Martlesham but took voluntary redundancy in 2000 when it became clear that things were becoming less technically focused and more managerially focused.  I now work for a different telecoms company in the town centre.

Maybe my speed halving was due to the storm, and maybe it wasn't.

I appear to have been upgraded to ADSL2 this morning:
Connection Speed     4054 kbps     888 kbps

So that's a bit better than before  :)

It looks like your target SNRM has been put up to 15dB by the exchange in response to instability, which is going to impact your downstream connection rate. Throughput still looks low for the profile, though...
