...after it had been connected for just over 24hrs to see if it would sync at a slightly higher speed, but instead I lost about 500kbps in my sync rate.

should that happen? Or have I made the DLM over-react and reduce the sync because I'm still in the training period?

I was hoping I could perhaps connect at a slightly higher rates as my noise margin had hardly wavered from 11db in 24hrs.

D-Dan

You rebooted at the wrong time. Noise is highest in the evenings.

Leave it alone until morning, then try again.

You may have just picked the wrong time to reboot your router.  The best time to do it is early morning, when the networks are quieter, then you stand a better chance of getting a higher sinc.

aah....buggery.

thanks guys!

i'm sure i can get this running faster as the nm is sitting at 11db ish and it's hardly moved from that all evening!

i'll either switch the router off when i got to bed and switch it on again in the morning, or i'll leave it on all night and then reboot in the morning.

which would you recommend?

D-Dan

Either way is good. What I don't recommend is re-booting it too often - that can be flagged as an unstable line. If you are going to reboot in the morning anyway, save a few pennies of electricity and power it down overnight :)

I must admit I do usually turn my router off at night, but i'm leaving it on at the moment following my re-grade to adsl2+.

i guess once the training period has finished i can go back to turning it off at night?

One for Sebby ;D Is SRA seamless rate adaption a feature of ADSL2+. I believe it is for ADSL2 and as I understand the data rate is automatically varied without the need for a manual resync or router reboot?

I had a really high noise margin but left my router connected and after a couple of weeks the noise margin automatically lowered, my advice would be to leave it alone for a while and see what happens.

BT's implementation of ADSL2+ does not use SRA as I understand it.

I would just leave it turned on after turning it back on in the morning - as Mav has said you need 14 solid days of sync before the BT hardware even thinks about lowering your noise margin (and thus paving the way for faster speeds).

Ah, I didn't realise it was that long! 14 days it is then!

I'm confident it'll come down, to 9db at least. My connection has been spot on tonight and the noise margin hasn't even dropped below 10db.

Even though I am not on ADSL2+ PuncH, I leave my router on 24/7 its easier that way for me and I think less problematic for the BT system, I turn every other appliance off apart from the Sky HD box, cooker, fridge freezer (obviously) telephone and careline,  (cooker is A rated top and bottom oven) same with the fridge freezer. I use energy saving bulbs in all sockets, have an A rated Baxi Platinum combi boiler for the bungalow, and the careline device uses three pence a year. I am very aware of my Carbon footprint hence I ditched the tower pc and got a laptop which also gets turned off, but for the router it seems safer just to leave it running, so it and BT can live happily ever after.....ish  ;)  But I do have a smoke alarm fitted which is mains powered (lighting circuit) and has battery back up for peace of mind. I would be inclined to leave your router on, it does no harm, let your line settle and just do its thing, and as said maybe re-sync in the morning but then leave it well alone so your profile settles as it should.  :)
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Although replacing a desktop with a laptop saves energy, I always wonder how much CO2 has been emitted during its manufacture. I wouldn't be surprised if it was more environmentally friendly not to replace things.

Too true. Until the green mafia start talking in terms of the whole life CO2 costs of items, they'll continue to face an uphill struggle to persuade the sceptics.

D-Dan

I hope it offers encouragement - my sync has increased today to 8871 - NM down to 5.5. I guess the wait isn't as long on ADSL2+ :)

Just have to wait for my bRAS to catch up

I actually rebooted again around this time last night and got my 500kbps in lost sync back  8)

Connection has now been up for around 24 hours so a few more days and hopefully things will start to get a bit quicker (not that it's slow...i just want more! muhahahahah!!)

Lance

That's just greedy! I think i need a 20 mile cable so we can share your line!

It's not THAT good!  ;)

Lance

It's significantly better than my line though!
