No dial tone/voice calls but still had internet?

Yesterday at some point my voice line went down. I had no dial tone and I was unable to make or receive calls but I still had internet with no problems? I phoned Talk Talk up on my mobile at about 10pm and was told there was a line fault and they would get it fixed but could take up to 5 working days. Late last night/ this morning the router could not sync with the exchange so I'm guessing that's when they started to fix it. About 2 hours ago both the dial tone and the internet was back on. They got it fixed pretty quick but BT speed test shows this.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 6400 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
    IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
    Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 94 kbps

Should I leave the router on for awhile or should I reboot the router or maybe even now report this to IDNet?

ADSL can jump a break in the line which stops the voice side dead in its tracks, Juice. You just need to wait for the profile to catch up now...

I should have known better than to think TT and BT could get it fixed that quick. Both voice and adsl went down again.

I'm loving that 86kbps link to the world I have still. The internet is not a luxury any more.

The problem there is the profile, not the sync, which needs to catch up.

The problem is a fault on the line, both adsl and voice go down and come back up for awhile. It's not going to get better untill Talk Talk get BT to fix it but who knows when they'll get around to doing that.

    Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 4582 kbps

Got one more profile jump to go to get back to my normal 5.5

ras> wan adsl linedata near

noise margin downstream: 15 db
output power upstream: 12 db
attenuation downstream: 36 db

ras> wan adsl linedata far

noise margin upstream: 27 db
output power downstream: 19 db
attenuation upstream: 19 db

Should my downstream noise margin be that high? I have a DECT cordless phone right behind the router (5cm) should I move it further away if I can, do they really affect it? I'm only using the cable that came with the router to connect it to a NTE5. What do people think about the high speed shielded cables are they worth getting?

The downstream margin is so high because the exchange has increased your target SNRM in response to instability. Theoretically, it will reduce in 3dB increments every 14 days that the router does not lose sync.

Don't bother with one of the really expensive RJ11 cables, but something like the twisted-pair ones that ADSL Nation do are worth the few quid they charge.
